Scientific Enquiry Kitchen Roll Investigation KS2 KS3
A detailed and editable booklet that takes the classic kitchen roll investigation and provides a structured approach that will guide students through the different stages of researching, planning and carrying out an accurate and reliable investigation.
In the investigation students will test the claims of a variety of different kitchen rolls brands either on their strength or absorbency. Students then use free learning (discovery) to design their own tests to gather evidence for these claims.
NOTE: The kitchen rolls used for this were purchased from Sainsburys and are easily source able but any 5 different brands will do and can be easily changed in the booklet.
Resource includes:
Approx 2-3 hours of lesson time
1. Introduction to the investigation
2. Preliminary test and planning guide
3. Advice on graph drawing for both scatter and bar charts
4. General analysis questions as well as directed questions specific to the investigation
5. Success Criteria for scientific skills and self assessment
6. Targets and teacher assessment
7. Glossary

Galapagos Islands Food Web Ecosystem ICT Lesson KS2 KS3 KS4
A perfect end to a habitats/ecosystems topic. This is designed as a student led independent ICT activity.
Students are given a table of Galapagos Island organisms that they have to use to arrange pictures of the organsisms into a food web.
Also included are a series of questions that get progressively harder and get students researching the Galapagos Islands.
Reversible Irreversible Change Candle Investigation
A full investigation (2-3 hours) into how the size of a beaker affects the time taken for a candle to go out.
The investigation is described in detail with:
An overview/knowledge sheet for the teacher including extension questions for able students
A cheat sheet with everything broken down into distinct scientific areas such as variables, equipment. method, diagram, safety, prediction, results table and comments on accuracy and reliability
Expected results and graph
Graph scaffold
Analysis conclusion breakdown with success criteria for low/middle/high students
Note - Please see my free resource under 6zero - Practical Skills for the guide on how to plan a scientific investigation, which this investigation should be used in conjunction with.
