A fun activity that asks students to look closely at Homer’s description of Calypso’s island. I have used this activity not only as revision of Book 5, but as a way to produce wonderful creative writing. (This activity produces great classroom display material!) Students are asked to design a postcard describing their reaction to Calypso’s island, having taken a cruise ship to see the place. 3 pages outlining the activity; suggesting what to include in the postcard. Students also need to be familiar with representing their ideas through metaphors / symbolism. The static image / poster is one way of students showcasing their knowledge of the myths symbolically. This can obviously be adapted to other means of presentation. Originally designed for New Zealand Curriculum NCEA Level 2 Classical Studies.
