Real-World Skills: Physical Health (eBook)

Personal Health is part of the Real-World Skills series. This series is meant to encourage students to think about what they can do to live a healthier, happier, more balanced life. This series was created to appeal especially to teens with playful cartoon characters that students can relate to. Students are provided practical tools – in the form of advice and suggestions – to successfully deal with everyday physical, emotional, and safety issues and situations. Each book has an “expert” character that shares their wisdom throughout each story as well as several teen characters that receive special “Teen Tips,” via text, at the end of each story. The purpose of this book is to let students know that they can take control of at least certain aspects of their physical health and well-being. Each story focuses on something that directly impacts how well our body functions. Through a series of real-life scenarios, students learn about the consequences of eating food with no nutritional value, not getting enough sleep, doing too much or not enough exercise, smoking, drinking, and doing drugs. They also learn about moderation and the benefits of eating a well-balanced diet and finding exercise that they enjoy. Each story has between 388 and 488 words. The reading level is between 2.6 and 4.1 according to the Flesch-Kincaid readability score. Two pages of follow-up comprehension questions help to reinforce learning. The first page of questions asks students to go back into the text to locate information. This is good preparation for the more difficult skill-specific comprehension questions asked on the second question page. The second activity asks questions that align with the Common Core Standards. Each question is labeled to show which standard is being met. Students are asked to answer the questions in complete sentences. The Skills Chart will show which stories meet which Common Core Standards.
