This is a reading comprehension for early readers relating to Valentine’s Day. The text contains high frequency words and decodable words. There are 4 questions and a sheet of general questions for the teacher/educator. Ideal for guided reading and for more able early readers who are confident in decoding words and know some of their high frequency words. Detailed Teacher’s Notes included. The teacher’s reading comprehension sheet is in colour and the duplicate sheet is in black and white for the children to follow with their fingers what the teacher is reading. As a whole group activity or individual work, children answer the questions. The general question sheet is for teachers to ask questions and for children to say the answers aloud. **Learning Aim: ** Listening and speaking activity relating to the passage. Can children follow words with their finger? Can they find the evidence in the story? Can they rhyme words? Can they find certains words in the text? This Saint Valentine’s Day reading comprehension is divided into four sections from A to D with questions below each section. There are not more than 5 questions for each passage. See below for extra activities. All four passages tell the story of Saint Valentine. In the teacher’s notes, I have suggested questions to create interest before handing out the reading comprehension. As a whole class activity, you can read the whole story and then ask questions about what you have read and asking some children/students to summarise, before small and/or independent group work. The reading comprehension requires students to: • Look for evidence in the passages • Make inference • Give their opinion • Select correct answers from multiple choice questions • Correct spelling errors in a paragraph (sight words, phonetically misspelt words and homophones). The extra activities are: Reading two paragraphs and correcting the spelling errors; and Complete a short writing task – Write a sentence or two on what hope, kindness and love mean to them. This is a reading comprehension activity. The reading covers three pages with a word count (including title) of 648 words. The topic relates to Epiphany, i.e. what it means and some of the countries that celebrate this Christian festival. There are 17 questions and tasks for students to do and they include finding evidence in the text, spelling, grammar and word work. Students read the first two pages and then as additional work they can go straight onto reading page three with additional activities. To begin the lesson, find out what students know about Epiphany and how it relates to the Christmas story before handing out the reading comprehension. You can use this resource for guided reading. Students can work in pairs or individually to answer the questions and tasks. Worksheet 1: Adverbs of Place Cloze Activity. Students choose a suitable adverb to complete the eight sentences. The adverb that was not used to complete the sentences, the students write their own sentence with that left over adverb in the space provided. Worksheet 2: Adverbs of Place Sentence Sort Worksheet (with Answer Sheet) Students sort out the jumbled words so that the sentence make sense placing the adverb at the end of the sentence. Worksheet 3 – Adding -where or -ward at the end of adverbs of place. Students will see a list of beginning words of adverbs. They should complete each word writing either ‘where’ or ‘ward’ at the end. E.g. if the beginning word is no ____, the student completes the word with ‘where’ to make nowhere. There is a total of 9 words to complete. Once Task A is done, students complete Task B – write 3 sentences with the adverbs ending in -where and 3 sentences ending in -ward. Worksheet 4 – Read and Answer Worksheet (with Answer Sheet). You could pair up students for this activity. First, they read each sentence. Then they answer the question Where? and write down the adverb of place. Word Search (with Solution) – Students find the words listed that go across and down. Suggested use with flashcards to increase vocabulary. Shuffle a selection of cards - ask a student to pick one.
