I have been teaching history since 2002 and I have been head of History at a school for 10 years which sees many of my students opt for GCSE, A level and beyond. I am passionate about History being taught well, and believe that this largely stems from good resources (as well of course effective delivery). My lessons and various teaching resources are therefore produced with the intention of inspiring students to think for themselves, to be challenged yet engaged.

AQA History A level Coursework Primary and Secondary sources record sheets.

Attached is 1 word document that has a brief outline of the AQA A level coursework and 2 charts one for primary source analysis and one for secondary sources, I usually blow these up to A3 to allow students plenty of opportunity to thoroughly investigate the sources. For the secondary sources there is scope to push the students to thoroughly investigate the historiography fully.

AS AQA History - How to analyse Primary sources

(0)
Primary Source Analysis Flow Chart specifically for the AQA AS History specification but can be used for all primary source evaluations. An easy to use flow chart for AS students to help them meet the demands of the new Primary Source question for the AS AQA exam. The document helps weaker students formulate an answer helping them to structure their ideas, whilst offering some guidance and a checklist for more able students. It is complicated but it does work! The AQA exam question ask them to analyse the value of the source in relation to a specific question and then to make a comparison with another source about which offers the most value – in relation to the question. As part of this analysis, students are expected to comment on the provenance and tone (where relevant) as well as the context and argument of the period studied. For a top mark answer students need to be able to balance provenance, tone and context on their analysis of each source to provide a meaningful and substantiated judgement! It is tricky but this document helps students of all abilities meet the requirements being asked of them.

Attached is a couple of lessons work on the Boer war. Within the ppt, there is a link to a super documentary available on you tube called Scorched Earth. There is a worksheet to guide students through the programme - with various activities for students to complete. There is also a supplied answer sheet for teaching staff. The lesson will requires students to have access to the War in Society text book by Hodder education. There is a worksheet which can be printed off for students to complete regarding the impacts of the war on British society on the ppt - once they have an understanding of the background. There is also an SEN version of this on the ppt. At the end there are some exam style questions linking to the various imperial wars as recommended by OCR.

NEW AQA American Dream A2 source work

A lesson examining the requirements for the AQA A2 syllabus the American Dream Primary source work. The lesson briefly covers what the students need to do for each primary source. This should NOT be set as a cover lesson, it needs teacher guidance through the analysis. Students can work in pairs or threes, they are to analyse their source (on the ppt - I would print and blow these up to A3). they are to spend 5/6 mins completing what they can examining content and argument, tone and emphasis, provenance and contextual knowledge. Students are then to swap their source with another pair and continue analysing another source. Ideally all pairs should have seen all six sources. Once everyone has seen and had ago at annotating the sources, these can then be collated and a set photocopied for all students to have a mini booklet of sample answers.

AQA AS American Dream Analysing a Primary source exam question

Contains a ppt which breaks down analysing Primary sources and the exam questions and an accompanying worksheet. The combination allows students to try and work through their own responses whilst supporting them if they are struggling. It is based on the extent of affluence in the USA by the early 1960s, so needs to be used towards the end of the yr 12 or first year of A2, where students will have obtained enough contextual knowledge to be able to answer the question comprehensively. As this source question is based at the end of part 1 I have NOT included the the "How to analyse Primary sources flow-chart" which I make reference to at the end of the ppt- it is hoped that students have already had some experience of constructing answers at this stage. However, the document can also be purchased if guidance is still required.

AS AQA American Dream revision plan

A break down for the AS AQA American Dream unit, using specification criteria and supported with key issues and events for greater context. Students can make a note where they feel their understanding of certain topics is, by dating under the red, yellow or green face. The idea behind this is so that students can see specific areas where they need to focus their revision; hopefully moving their learning all to the green smiley face by the time of the exam. This was an extremely useful resource for my students last year as they and I, were able to monitor their progress. I'm currently in the process of writing the new one for A2.

A2 How to answer Primary sources flow chart

(0)
Hot the heels of my AS flow chart I have created a version for my A2 students and thought you would appreciate it. It is in line with the AQA requirements but with a little bit of tweaking it would be useful for any of the exam boards requirments for primary source analysis. Whilst not a restrictive formula, it does offer guidance for weaker students to follow an order to allow them to cover all aspects on the AQA mark scheme. It also works as a check list for the more able. This is subtly different from the AS version as there is no need for a judgment at AS, however the exam board does state that sources can be used and linked together where deemed appropriate and relevant.

(0)
This is a series of tasks serving as an overview for the War and Society unit for the OCR Modern world A unit - Medieval to 1500, designed to help with the massive amount of content required for this course. These revision sheets cover the threat of the Vikings and Saxon’s responses, the Norman conquest and it’s impact, the break down of the Feudal system, the Anarchy and King John and the Barons, the Age of Chivalry, and the Hundred years’ war. The intention being to give a decent overview from which to start effective revision. Students can always use their class notes to add extra details to these tasks. Some of the tasks included involve completing charts, categorising and adding evidence. The sheets are broken down into the time period, type of warfare, attitude and responses and the impact on the British people. There are extra aspects to some - such as why was the Norman Conquest successful as this is covered in the exam spec. There are also some opportunities for students to answer an 8 and a 14 mark questions.

There is then an activity for students to complete to cover the impact of the conflict on British society. Within the PPT there is a newspaper template for students to complete, reflecting the importance of news reporting, and the unexpected heroes: the troops and nurses. There is also a template for SEN students to use, where they can fill in the gaps and then complete the section on the nurses themselves, to help speed up the process. The SEN worksheet will need the War and Society - Explaining the Modern World Hodder Education Text book.

OCR War and Society: The Elizabethan wars 1585-1603

(0)
This is a lesson which divides the class into groups and allows them to be creative with the vast amounts of evidence required for this course. Students are to all work as journalists to complete a newspaper on the Elizabethan wars. Each journalist will have their own jobs to complete, but the task is set so that should anyone finish, they can help the others complete their jobs and put together the newspaper. The ultimate goal is for each group to have completed their own newpaper of the Elizabethan wars and their impact on English Society. At the end of the ppt there is a GCSE 10 mark question which encourages students to investigate why Elizabeth chose to fight as she did.

This activity is an excellent revision, covering all the aspects of the A2 AQA American dream unit from 1945- 1980. Students are asked to categorise the key events from social, economic, political, international and religious and then identify key changes and examples of continuity. The timeline alone is a useful resource for revision and can be printed out and used to check basic knowledge.

AQA A2 LBJ's Great Society with Primary sourcework

(0)
This is a couple of lessons work. It starts with a recap and an overall research task to obtain information to assess how successful was Lyndon Baines Johnson’s Great Society plans. Students are asked to produce a chart showing its successes and failures - there is a completed version included on the ppt which has a few examples. Following on from this, there is then a slide with some information about Sargent Shriver and his reasons for becoming frustrated with the Great Society. Some good Q&A could come from the statistic about the expense of the reforms against the cost of the Vietnam war. The second lesson uses the sourcework from the 2017 A2 AQA exam. Students are broken down into groups and asked to analyse their source in relation to the question and the markscheme - they are then to swap groups and share their knowledge about their source with other memembers. A homework task to write up their answers as an A2 answer is also included. This should NOT be used and set as cover work as teacher guidance is needed to facilitate group work and to ensure a higher level of analysis with the sources

Was the policy of appeasement a mistake - interpretations work in prep for GCSE

(0)
This is worksheet for a lesson in Year 9 in preparation for getting students to understand the various historiography for appeasement at GCSE. This simplistically encourages students to identify the arguments for and against the policy. Student are then encouraged to complete an opinion poll and make a decision over how they would have felt about Hitler and the policy of appeasement in 1938 and then again for 1939. Students should be able to see how the circumstances surrounding Hitler’s actions changed people’s views and opinions.

NEW Revision Game War and Society OCR Modern World A spec.

A very simple revision game that can be done in pairs, small groups or as a whole class in teams. Students are to roll the dice twice to come up with their coordinates for their clue on the board. They are then to respond to the clue. If they do this successfully they win the points on the dice. If they are able to give examples and discuss for 30 seconds their scores can be doubled. I often do this kind of activity as a class with them in teams. If a team can not answer, then they must hunt out the examples before they can rejoin! A fun way to bring in and cover lots of content as part of the revision process.
