I am a secondary school & A-level Science teacher, specialising in Biology. I am also an experienced AQA GCSE Biology Examiner. My resources contain a mix of Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons aimed at meeting specification points for the new AQA Trilogy GCSE course and KS3 Activate course. All of my lessons include at least one opportunity for self-assessment, a range of activities to suit students of all abilities, a set of differentiated starter questions and a plenary.

This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Physics GCSE, particularly the 'Electricity’ SoW. For more lessons designed to meet specification points for the NEW AQA Trilogy specifications for Biology, Chemistry and Physics please see my shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience The lesson begins with an introduction into how to draw electrical circuit diagrams, a diagram is shown and students need to identify the correct components using the labels provided. The next part of the lesson focuses on the roles of different electrical components, students will each be given a different piece of information about a component. They can then walk around the room, sharing information with each other in order to complete a table on the components and their roles. This work can then be self-assessed once students have completed it. The next task will assess students understanding of these components in a ‘Quick Check - Who am I ?’ task. Pupils will need to identify the component from the description given, they can write their answers in their books and then check their work against the answers when they are revealed. Pupils will the be reminded of the rules on how to draw a circuit diagram, before being given a list of descriptions of different circuits. Students need to draw the circuits that are being described, the answers to this task can then be revealed using the mark scheme in the PowerPoint presentation. The last part of the lesson will require pupils to construct electrical circuits using electrical equipment, three diagrams of electrical circuits are provided to students, they need to use these to construct their own circuits. The plenary task requires pupils to complete a word search, once the words have been found they should write a definition of each of them All resources are included at the end of the presentation. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Chemistry GCSE, particularly the 'Earth’s Atmosphere’ SoW. For more lessons designed to meet specification points for the NEW AQA Trilogy specifications for Biology, Chemistry and Physics please see my shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience Firstly, students are shown how to ammonia produced in the Haber process is reacted with different acids to form different ammonium compounds before being used in fertilisers. Firstly, students will investigate how to produce ammonium sulphate in the lab - they will be provided with a practical worksheet which they will need to work their way through in pairs. This involves a titration, which they should have carried out before, their results can be recorded in the table provided on the worksheet. Next, pupils will watch a video on the production and use of fertilisers - using the information provided int he video a set of questions needs to be answered. This work can then be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. Lastly, pupils will be given a set of information about how fertilisers are made in the lab compared to being made by chemical industry. Using this information students will need to complete a comparison table which focuses on starting materials, equipment, safety, yield and running costs. This work can be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The plenary task requires pupils to write three quiz questions to test their peers knowledge on what they have learned during the lesson. All resources are included at the end of the presentation. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Chemistry GCSE, particularly the 'Earth’s Atmosphere’ SoW. For more lessons designed to meet specification points for the NEW AQA Trilogy specifications for Biology, Chemistry and Physics please see my shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience The lesson begins with an outline of why nitrogen so important to plants and how farming can disrupt the balance of nitrate ions in the soil, hence the need for efficient fertilisers. Firstly, pupils will watch a video on the Haber process - a way of turning nitrogen in the air into ammonia, the ammonia can then be used to produce fertilisers. Whilst students are watching the video they should be answering a set of questions which will be provided to them, this work can then be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. Next, pupils are given a diagram of the Haber process as well as some jumbled up statements describing each step - they will need to arrange the statements in the correct order - assigned to the correct part of the diagram. This work can be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The next part of the lesson focuses on the reaction that takes place and the controlled conditions of the reaction vessel which ensures that the optimum temperature and pressure are maintained for the optimum yield of ammonia - without expending more energy than needed! The last part of the lesson is a set of exam-style questions, pupils will need to answer these in their books and they can then either peer or self-assess their work using the answers provided. The plenary task is for pupils to write a list of key words from the lesson. All resources are included at the end of the presentation. This work can be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The next task for pupils to complete is an ‘Each one, teach one’ task - in pairs, pupils are either given information about glass or ceramics, they need to learn the information and teach each other so they are able to complete a table of information on both. This work can then be peer or self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. Next, pupils will watch a video about different composite materials - they will need to answer a set of questions whilst watching the video and this can be marked using the mark scheme provided. The next activity is for pupils to investigate the differences between reinforced concrete vs. normal concrete. Finally, students will complete a ‘Quick Check’ activity - pupils will need to answer a set of questions to summarise what they have learned this lesson. This work can be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The plenary activity requires pupils to write a Whatsapp message to their friends outlining what they have learned during the lesson. Pupils are then given some information about high-density polyethene and low-density polyethene, they will need to use this information to complete a worksheet of questions. This work can then be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. Pupils will now complete an investigation into the modification of polymers by finding how the quantity of borax solution can affect the properties of slime, they can record their observations in a table in their books. Next, students are introduced to the processes of thermosetting and thermosoftening polymers with a video - using the information in the video they will need to answer a set of questions. This work can be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The last task is a ‘Quick Check’ task - pupils will need to answer a set of questions about what they have learned this lesson. Their work can then be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided in the PowerPoint. The plenary is a ‘Pick a plenary’ activity which requires pupils to either unscramble a set of anagrams or write a summary sentence for the lesson using a list of key words. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Chemistry GCSE, particularly the 'Using Our Resources’ SoW. For more lessons designed to meet specification points for the NEW AQA Trilogy specifications for Biology, Chemistry and Physics please see my shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience The lesson starts with a Think > Pair > Share task for pupils to consider the properties of gold, pupils can list them down and then share their ideas with the class. The property of gold being very soft is not always useful, especially when it is being used to make jewelery and so it is often mixed with another metal (e.g. platinum) to make it stronger. The concept of an ‘alloy’ is then introduced, as well as a definition and an explanation as to why alloys are useful. Some useful properties of alloys are listed - malleable, durable, strong, flexible - pupils need to come up with a a definition for each of these properties. Once this task is complete students can self-assess their work using the mark scheme provided. The next task for pupils to complete is ‘Who’s right for the job?’ - students will be given information on the properties of different metals, as well as a list of alloys needed for different jobs - used in jewelery/used to make airplane bodies. Students need to select the correct metals to make the alloys required, their work can be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The next part of the lesson focuses on iron alloys specifically, firstly students will watch a video on iron alloys and will need to answer a set of questions - this work can then be self-assessed using the answers provided. The last task for pupils to complete is a table whereby students need summarise how carbon content affects steel and it’s properties, this work can also be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The plenary task requires pupils to spend a minute talking to the person next to them about what they have learned this lesson. All resources are included at the end of the presentation. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Chemistry GCSE, particularly the 'Earth’s Resources’ SoW. For more lessons designed to meet specification points for the NEW AQA Trilogy specifications for Biology, Chemistry and Physics please see my shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience The first part of the lesson focuses on the problems of metal extraction, particularly to the environment. Students will firstly brainstorm their ideas of how metal extraction can cause problems, then some examples are revealed using the PowerPoint presentation and the need for recycling is also explained. Students will then need to complete a progress check, a set of questions to assess their knowledge of what they have learned this lesson. The answers to which are included in the PowerPoint presentations so students can self-assess or peer-assess work. Pupils will now focus on the extraction and recycling of three metals: aluminium, copper and iron. They will firstly be given some information sheets on these three metals and using these they will need to answer a 6-mark exam question which requires pupils to give a use for each metal and outline reasons why they should be recycled by listing both economic and environmental reasons. This task can then be peer or self-assessed using the comprehensive mark scheme provided. Pupils will now watch a video which outlines limits to recycling, pupils will need to answer a set of questions whilst watching the video. This work can then be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The last task is a word search, pupils need to find a list of key words in the word search and for each word they find they need to write a sentence which links that word to the extraction of metal from it’s ore. The plenary activity is for pupil to spend five minutes thinking about what they have learned in the lesson - what they have understood and what they would like to spend more time on. Next, pupils will watch a video on the process and importance of carrying out an LCA - pupils can answer a set of questions whilst watching this and when finished they can self-assess their work using the mark scheme provided. Pupils are then shown a diagram which outlines the input and output of an LCA, including all of the processes which occur in between. Pupils will now consider the overall environmental impact of the production of a paper bag compared to the production of a carrier bag. Pupils can discuss their ideas of which may make the larger impact on the environment. Next, pupils will be given a set of information about the extraction of raw materials, manufacture, use and reuse and disposal of these two bags - using this information they will need to conduct an LCA for each bag. To do this they have been provided with a table to fill in, for each factor they will need to score the environmental impact from 1-10. At the end they will have a score out of 40, the higher the score the larger the environmental impact. The last part of the lesson requires pupils to consider the problems of conducting a life cycle assessment, they can mind map their ideas as a pair and then share as part of a class discussion. The teacher can then reveal some of the issues with LCA’s, pupils can check their work against these answers. The plenary task is for pupils to write three quiz questions to test their peers knowledge of what they have learned this lesson. All resources are included at the end of the presentation. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Chemistry GCSE, particularly the 'Earth’s Resources’ SoW. For more lessons designed to meet specification points for the NEW AQA Trilogy specifications for Biology, Chemistry and Physics please see my shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience The lesson begins with a task whereby pupils need to use their phones/laptops to research the dates in which different metals were discovered. They should complete the table in their books and then write a sentence to summarise the relationship between the date in which the metal was discovered and it’s reactivity. The first part of the lesson now focuses on extraction of copper from copper-rich ores, two methods are firstly introduced - smelting and extraction using sulfuric acid. Pupils will then be given a set of information on these processes and will need to answer a set of questions, once complete pupils can self-assess their work using the answers provided. The next part of the lesson will require pupils to undertake a practical investigation whereby they will extract copper from an ore called malachite, an ore which contains copper carbonate. Students will need to follow the instructions provided and will then need to note down their observations of the electrode at which the copper will collect. A summary and explanation of the results will then be provided via the PowerPoint presentation for pupils to check their work. Lastly, pupils will watch a video about low-grade copper ores and the processes of phytomining and bioleaching for the extraction of copper from such ores. NEW AQA GCSE (2016) Chemistry - Water Treatment

This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Chemistry GCSE, particularly the 'Earth’s Atmosphere’ SoW. For more lessons designed to meet specification points for the NEW AQA Trilogy specifications for Biology, Chemistry and Physics please see my shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience Pupils will firstly come up with a mind map of ideas about why water is such an important resource, they can discuss with their partner and write their ideas in their books. Some of the reasons can then be revealed via the PowerPoint presentation and pupils can assess their work - making corrections where necessary. Pupils are then shown a quick recap of the stages involved in the water cycle, before beginning to look at the treatment of fresh water and purification of salt water. Students will be given a worksheet of questions, around the room will be information sheet on how fresh water is turned into potable, drinking water and how sea water is purified. Pupils will need to read the information posters to answer their questions, this work can then be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The next part of the lesson will focus on waste water treatment, pupils will watch a video on the steps involved with sewage treatment. Pupils will answer a set of questions whilst watching the video, this work can then be self-assessed using the answers provided. The final task is for pupils to complete an exam-style question on this topic, they can answer in their books and either self or peer assess using the mark scheme provided. Finally, pupils will be given a set of answers, they will need to come up with questions which match these answers. All resources are included at the end of the presentation.
