Ants are simple insects with complex lives and evolutional histories. This is the most interesting documentary on ants that explores everything from how they behave, what they do in case of emergencies, what insect they evolved from, the symbiotic relationships they have with other organisms, and more. Your students will never look at ants the same way again after watching the documentary and answering the questions. Many students are surprised to learn that there are scientists who study ants for a living.

A unique way to teach about energy transfer! You will definitely catch students’ interest level with the candle powered car anchoring phenomena. Students are surprised to see that this toy car can be powered by simply lightening a candle. In groups, they model together the different energy transfers and they explain how they believe the car works.
Before students watch the anchoring phenomena video and begin embarking on creating their models, they answer a few do now questions.

NGSS Chemistry Alignment
NGSS.HS-PS3-2
Teach students about chemical reactions by having them explore in-depth how alcohol flushing occurs at the molecular level in the form of a poster project.
Students research:
Pharmacokinetics
Alcohol Flush
Students explain:
What causes the red flush in a person’s face when they consume alcohol?
How does the red flush connect to pharmacokinetics?
Students include:
Diagrams detailing how the flushing occurs. Including what is occurring at the molecular level.

Students put their artistic and creative skills to use when they develop a children’s book on Conservation, Reducing, and Recycling and their relation to climate change.
The pdf document comes with a description of the Children’s Book Mini Project, the requirements, and several student examples of books created.
The best part about this project is its alignment to NGSS. It could be used in a high school chemistry class during the climate change unit or could it could be used as an Earth Day project. The possibilities are endless!
Finally a collection of activities and lessons that will interest students and get them excited about chemistry! This lesson is formatted using the 5E’s.
Students begin with an anchoring phenomena that involves watching a time-lapse video of cookies getting baked.
They then model the stages a cookie goes through when it’s getting baked.
Next, students watch a video that explains the science behind baking cookies and they answer questions on the video.
Afterwards, they look at two cookie recipes and apply what they learned about baking cookies.
Finally, students answer two exit-slip questions that tie together what they learned.
Wow! All of these activities and questions in one document which is available in pdf and word form. There’s more. You also get a key which is available in pdf and word form. Your students will thank you for choosing an exciting topic to teach them about food chemistry!
This NGSS Decomposition Unit Plan is here just in time for Halloween and is complete with
an anchoring phenomena activity
a modeling activity
a lab experiment that students self-design and carry out
a brief research activity
two forms of assessments (formal lab report and presentation with rubric).
detailed lesson plan (coming soon!)
At the end of this unit, students will have learned and explored the decomposition process a pumpkin goes through. They will have also researched different methods used to preserve food.
You made a smart decision clicking on the Ocean Acidification Poster Project! This poster project has been tried with high schools students in two various schools and it works really well in getting them to research in depth what ocean acidification is. They find it really fun and it puts learning into their own hands.
Students choose from a list of topics or they could choose a topic of their own and they describe how jelly fish, for example, are affected by ocean acidification in the form of an informational poster. This project will take about two class periods for students to work on and one class period to present their posters.
When you download this file you will receive:

sample poster examples high school students have created
The best part about this project is how it is aligned with NGSS Chemistry.
