John Schumann's 'I Was Only 19' gives a narrative of a 19-year old conscript in the Australian Army in 1968-69, at the time of the Vietnam War. The song describes selection, training, experiences in Vietnam and reflections on the war after his return. The terms and concepts in the song are explained and are followed by a set of activities. The set of activities includes:
1. What did you learn about the experiences of Anzac soldiers at Gallipoli and after the war?
2. How did the song make feel? Why?
3. How does John Schumann use language and tone to help you feel this way?
4. Is the song for or against war? Why?
This resource includes a worksheet and answers to accompany the BBC documentary, Conquistadors: Episode 1 - The Fall of the Aztecs presented by Michael Wood. It covers the arrival of the first Spanish under Hernan Cortez, Cortez's journey to Tenochtitlan, conflict with the Aztecs under Montezuma and defeat of the Aztec forces.
In 1916 an Australian mining battalion consisting of miners from the North Queensland goldmines, the Hunter Valley coalmines and the Broken Hill and northern Tasmanian mines set about breaking the stalemate on the Western Front by blowing up Hill 60, a German strong-point in Belgium. The film is an excellent depiction the contrasts of life of soldiers on both the Western Front and life on a homestead in North Queensland in 1916. This worksheet is designed for students of the NSW History K-10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum.

The BBC documentary, Genghis Khan, is an excellent account of the his life and achievements. This worksheets assists students to focus on the problems and issues associated with his leadership of the tribe, army and nation. It is designed for NSW students of the History K-10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum.

Depth Study 6a: The Mongol Expansion
Heidi is Hitler's daughter. A lonely, anxious girl who craves love and to live her life as other children. In this activity students are provided with a profile of her character from the novel and given a list of personality characteristics to select the verbs that best describe her.
This resource includes 3 separate primary sources from eyewitnesses to events in the topic Australian involvement in the Vietnam War and activities based on the source including who wrote the source, what we know about the writer, how their presence at the historical incidents impacts their writing, whether the information is reliable and the purpose of the writing. The 3 sources are:

+ Bob Gibson explains why he enlisted for the Vietnam War, c.1967 CE
+ Bill White speaks to the Sydney Moratorium Marchers, 1970 CE

This worksheet accompanies the video, Prisoner Number A26188 - Henia Bryer. This is a well-structured narrative of the life of Henia Bryer, a child prisoner in the Radom Ghetto, Majdanek Concentration Camp, death march to Germany and inmate at Bergen-Belsen. Henia quietly talks about all she saw, smelt and heard in all these places. She takes the viewer on the journey with her. This is an excellent video for teenagers. This worksheet focuses student's attention on the issues in the film.

This is a student worksheet and answer sheet to accompany the documentary Vietnam: A Television History Episode 1 The Roots of War. The film provides an overview of the significance of the war to the US and then looks at why France and the US became involved in a war in Vietnam. I use this worksheet as part of the NSW Modern History Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum

Option C: Conflict in Indochina 1945-1975

Homer Yannos is the character that changes the most as a result of the war. From an immature larrikin figure to a guerrilla fighter who can live off the land and plan effective attacks against the enemy soldiers. This activity looks at descriptions of him before and during the war, his personality characteristics and then re-writing a speech he delivers to add a tone of anger and threat.
This worksheet accompanies the ABC-TV documentary Australia on Trial - The Myall Creek Massacre (2011). It covers the events around the 1836 massacre and the two court cases in 1837/38 culminating in the verdict when in the hanging of 7 convict stockmen. The agendas of the squatters, Governor Gipps and urban middle-class society are examined. It is probably beyond the scope of the video to investigate the perspectives of the Kamilaroi people and that of the convicts. Neither had power in the 1830s to give their view of the crimes.
Anna is the narrator of the story of Hitler's daughter, a story that she has made up. But the sights, smells and sounds are just a little too real. Students are provided with a summary of her background, personality and key quotes. They are then asked to imagine they are staying with family in Wallaby Creek and they meet Anna. They must think of 5 complex questions you would like to ask Anna about herself. They then think of 5 ways that they would change Anna's story to make it more dramatic or romantic or historical. The last activity asks them to imagine that the narration of The Story is made by another character and they must think of how this would change the story of Heidi.

Worksheet and answers to accompany the Timeline documentary, The Real Macbeth, presented by Tony Robinson. The video examines the life of the real Scottish king, Macbeth and the times in which he lived. Robinson identifies where the play is based on fact and where it is based on life at the time that the play was released. A very thorough presentation.

2a Making a Nation - Australia 1900-1914
The worksheet includes an excellent passage from Les Carlyon's work, Gallipoli and activities that include visual images of people and equipment commonly found in rural areas in the period 1900-1914. There is an extended writing activity on whether student's believe that a person's environment affects the development of their personality and whether this applies to the characteristics of a nationality.
Fiona Maxwell represents innocence, naiveity and romance. When she faces war and taking action for what she believes is right the results are interesting. This activity provides students with quotes from the novel relating to her character, selecting personality characteristics that best reflects Fi and recounting examples of her actions that reflect her innocence, naiveity and romantic inclinations.
