This is a game where students will have to figure out where their classmate was standing by using the compass bearings / degrees and what they have said they could see. It’s a great way to learn about compass directions and degrees while exploring the outdoors and enjoying nature. First, students choose a place in the school / outdoor grounds and record on their sheet what they can see at each given compass bearing. They then swap sheets with a classmate and head off to try and figure out where they were stood by using the information in the table. Two sets of pair cards to help children learn how to read one and four quadrant coordinates grids. They can be used in a variety of ways as a whole class, in pairs, or individually. We find them very effective a exit cards or even a fun extension activity for those early finishers. Here are two ways that we have used them successfully: Game 1: Give each of the children 1 card, get them to walk around and find the other person with the matching card. How quickly can they do it? Game 2: In pairs, put all of the cards face down on the table. Take it in turns turning over two cards to try and find a matching pair. The person with the most pairs at the end is the winner. Put on some high vis jackets and investigate the traffic in your local area with this data handling activity where your students will count and record the amount and types of traffic passing a chosen area. They will record their results in a visual tally chart. This is a great investigation to aid discussion on global warming and local issues. Ratios are everywhere and a great opportunity to take your math lesson outside! For this fun outdoor ratio lesson your students will collect some leaves, write some ratio sentences based on their characteristics and then convert the ratios to fractions. It’s a great way to recap ratio to students and give them lots of practice at spotting different ratios as well as converting the ratios to their equivalent fractions. This activity gets your students looking at fact families through the very popular bar model. This pack contains 8 differentiated sheets where they must use the bar model to help them complete the blank boxes to make the fact family by finding the appropriate additions and subtractions.
