I sometimes find children can be slightly unclear on the actual difference between fact and opinion. This always seems to come up in the SAT reading papers so I constructed this short exercise that incorporates a passage on New York. Should serve well as a 10 minute starter that can be discussed as a class afterwards. Alternatively, it could serve as a shared class reading exercise.

Poem about an old oak tree that discusses getting old and seeing better days. Useful for examples of metaphor and alliteration, with other poetry conventions. 20 mark comprehension quiz to accompany the poem, incorporating: **inference retrieval fact/opinion true/false chronological ordering ** Exercise is accompanied by an answer sheet (separate file) for ease of marking. Good practice in the run-up to the SAT reading paper as poetry may be one of the reading sections (it was last year!). Hope you enjoy.

A full workout on long multiplication - starting with multiplying 3 numbers by a 2-digit number and progressing to 4 digits multiplied by 2-digits. Exercise provides a 15 question workout that focuses greatly on the 6,7,8 and 9 times tables and tests pupils’ handling of larger numbers from the 20s to the 90s. Ideal as a maths revision task, holding task or starter/plenary. Answers are included on pages 3 and 4 for ease of marking.

A good resource for setting homework on a ‘problem a day’ basis or acting as an extension task if you want to laminate them and put them in a pot (this is what I do). A science fiction for years 5 and 6. The story is a teaching written novella (10 pages) split into 5 chapters. Each chapter has its own accompanying comprehension quiz of around 10 questions. A good assessment tool that covers much of the arithmetic content from the National Curriculum for Year 5. Can also be used to assess entry level at the beginning of Year 6 and together with the Year 6 assessments can be ideal for showing progress throughout the year. The test is set out in a very similar format to a SAT paper and all answers are included on the same page for ease of marking.
