I have been teaching Performing Arts for over 10 years and I have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with you. Most recently I was teaching in Bangkok, prior to this I was The Director of Theatrical Productions in Amman, Jordan for 2 years. Before this I was Head of Dance in a school in the UK for 4 years. Dance: Musical theatre exploring Jerome Robbins West Side Story

This is a 3 part lesson exploring ways to build tension and tell stories through dance. The lesson is focused on the work of Jerome Robbins “West Side Story” Lesson 1: Learn some stylised actions (videos provided for the non-specialist). Students explore the impact of the infamous walks and clicks and choreograph their own short sequences using this idea. Lesson 2: Focused more on the stylised actions and using them to develop the work from the previous lesson in their groups Lesson 3: Focus on expressive skills and preparing for performance of their work. Students will perform and then watch an excerpt from the musical to reflect on demonstrating critical thinking and appreciation of Jerome Robbins choreography. There are teacher guidance notes throughout, feel free to adapt and change slides according to your students needs.

This is a single ppt introducing shadows and encouraging initial thoughts and interpretations from the students. It could be extended to cover 2 one hour lessons simply by encouraging longer discussion and sharing of ideas It also provides an overview of the unit and a long term homework task. This would also be usable for your online learners. I do not have permission to share the videos from the AQA website but you will need two of them for this lesson: the whole work video and the interview with Christopher Bruce

SUBJECT: Dance Year 7 AREA: creating dance on a theme ALSO SUITABLE FOR: Dance year 6, PE (Dance unit) This is by far one of my most favourite SOW. Its engaging for boys, girls, reluctant dancers and high ability. It is fun and accessible on so many levels. I have adapted it several times over the years, please feel free to continue to adapt for your learners too. Resources in this pack 7 week SOW including differentiation, blooms questioning and links to GCSE PPT for Baseline lesson, Lesson 1, 2 and 4 PPT of structures in dance (you won’t need all of these for year 7 but its good to have) The Letters (resource to print or use electronically - these are each mission). I would normally put these in envelopes for each group to open at the start of each lesson. A workbook for non doers to work through and remain engaged in the lesson (possibly adaptable for your online learners if you are teaching a blended lesson Check list for peer assessment

This ppt covers 2 lessons that break down the choreographic devices, relationships and key movement phrases in the focus sections (Kneeling, Flow two and Floor). This resources is designed for students to edit together so I have used it in google slides to achieve this, however you can adapt this should that not be an option for you. The collaborative nature of the lesson allows for students to explore the set work as a team in order to build a response to 6 and 12 mark questions.

Online written activity for critical appreciation (you choose the work to watch, so can be used multiple times) A booklet of non practical participant tasks - I created this for injured students and with SEN students in mind that struggled to access the practical work. The tasks allow students to meet your learning objectives and use the language of dance to write about your lesson. The KS3 written task in a KS3 friendly GCSE style exam. You can use the whole thing or parts for cover work or classwork “Improving elevation” a lesson written for KS4 when my students were struggling to really get off the floor when they jumped Kinesphere lesson: single lesson that can be taught online or in person Creating a solo: two lessons that can be taught online or in person Flamenco: 3 lessons introducing this style to KS3, the first two of which are teachable online. This free resource is the first of three lesson workshops exploring how Jerome Robbins builds tension and tells stories through dance. In this lesson students can learn some stylised actions (videos provided) and develop a short group sequence as “The Jets”. This lesson was written for year 8 but can be adapted for older and younger dancers. The final task can also be extended into a second lesson of refining their work ready to perform it. This is the introduction lesson to my Capoeira scheme of work. In this lesson students will learn the basic actions (images and video linked in resource). Please note it is best that you learn these actions yourself prior to delivering the class so you can demonstrate them. Students then create their own short sequence as a soloist and then develop this in pairs. At the end of the lesson students watch an excerpt from A Linha Curva to reflect on how Itziki Galili incorporated this in his work (Links to GCSE).
