Russia and Soviet Union 1917-91 timeline revision

(0)
A great starting point for AS revision. Print off on an A3 sheet. - Get pupils in pairs to describe the main events of the period in chronological order -Split class into teams add further details to the timeline in terms of themes of study, e.g. communist governments or industrial and agricultural changes. Works well if teams use different highlighters and colours representing the themes. Good for peer teaching and setting the scene.

What makes a great leader?

(0)
A generic double lesson that could be used in a variety of subjects as an introduction to aspects of leadership. The lesson is based around ideas of pupils and then looking at 3 case studies - Abraham Lincoln, Karen Brady and Alex Ferguson. After looking at summaries of their life stories, pupils can debate similarities and differences in their experiences, turning points and other interesting observations. Certainly creates debates in the classroom! I have used this as an introduction to Jesus and also for a Growth Mindset themed day in school.

Christmas through time quiz and activities

(0)
A history themed set of activities that can completed with classes over the festive period. Includes: - A quiz about the traditions of Christmas - An answer sheet for teachers - A timeline task for pupils to complete in the classroom and in the computer suite I have extended this activity by: - With KS2 groups I would advise using computers to research more facts and then get groups of pupils to present a short news broadcast about different time periods, e.g. Christmas in Medieval times , Christmas in Tudor times and Christmas in Victorian times. You can then have discussions about similarities and differences between the periods. - With older KS3 groups I am getting the pupils to place lots of facts about Christmas on the timeline and then getting them to put them in groups, e.g. facts about traditions, facts about rulers and highlighting these. Then we are looking for any turning points or times of continuity through history.

Cold War resources - Teenage Kicks!

(0)
A series of lessons I do with my Yr9's that mixes the political and social history of the Cold War. They explore how political events panned out during the decades of the Cold War and then in the following lesson investigate what life was like for teenagers at the time. This pack also includes: - A full set of detailed pages with lesson objectives/outcomes and suggested activities with links. - Resources that can be used with a number of the lessons To help resource this further; get hold of some teenager magazines from the 80s (i.e. BJ magazine) and photocopy them, the BBC documentary box set called the Twentieth Century and some items such as Walkman's and records. These are great to use as discussion points during lessons. I got hold of most from other (older) teachers and TA's. Also a good excuse to go hunting around family lofts for toys, board games, newspapers and defunct electronics. I can't stress how much pupils and you will enjoy this unit. It's a nostalgic journey into a key era of world history. Also still very relevant now.

Roman Britain - Attack!

A lesson developed through staff collaboration using Lesson Study. Look for the other similarly named lessons. - Fully resourced - Fun and interactive - Designed for all abilities (including SEN) - Pair/Group work focused I delivered the lesson as follows: Starter: Inference Picture Task. Get pupils to try and suggest what may be happening in the picture (e.g. The White Cliffs of Dover suggests it’s in Britain etc) Main Tasks: Quick question video clip in which pupils watch the film and write down some basic answers. This is used to set the scene. Group Work: Get pupils into groups of 3. Prior to the lesson stick on one side of sugar/A3 paper the resources I have included (sources for invasion). Also pupils should read the 'Instruction sheet legionnaire' to gain an understanding of the task. Then give the pupils 15 minutes to plan. After this use the PP to bring up the scenario slides which may put a spanner in their planning. I do this every 5 minutes. Plenary/Consolidation: Pupils are to use the sentence starters to write an extended piece of writing about the invasion of Britain. Also, use the link to the BBC to see how accurate the pupils were in their exercises.
