These resources includes:
- A lesson on District 6 with a link to similarities with the film District 9
- A source based test on Apartheid
- Worksheets to help investigate key areas of Apartheid
A series of 10 lessons on the assassination of JFK and the different theories surrounding it. Also included in this pack is a few of the resources to help deliver it.
A SOW and some of the resources linked to it. Includes:
- A lesson by lesson SOW with objectives, suggested activities and outcomes
- Resources for some of the lessons including the Berlin Wall, 9/11, 1960s and suffragettes
A series of lessons I do with my Yr9's that mixes the political and social history of the Cold War. They explore how political events panned out during the decades of the Cold War and then in the following lesson investigate what life was like for teenagers at the time. This pack also includes:
- A full set of detailed pages with lesson objectives/outcomes and suggested activities with links.
- Resources that can be used with a number of the lessons
To help resource this further; get hold of some teenager magazines from the 80s (i.e. BJ magazine) and photocopy them, the BBC documentary box set called the Twentieth Century and some items such as Walkman's and records. These are great to use as discussion points during lessons. I got hold of most from other (older) teachers and TA's. Also a good excuse to go hunting around family lofts for toys, board games, newspapers and defunct electronics.
I can't stress how much pupils and you will enjoy this unit. It's a nostalgic journey into a key era of world history. Also still very relevant now.
A collection of resources that could be used with your SOW:
- A simple internet search activity to be used at the end of a study on slavery and the CRM
- A statements sheet with comments about slavery and equal rights which promote classroom discussion
- A PowerPoint and worksheet lesson in which pupils listen to some tracks (links to You Tube audio tracks on PP) and then come up with their own album of the CRM including designing the cover and choosing the tracks. This worksheet is better blown up to A3 so pupils have a good area in which to create their album design.
A collection of resources to help you deliver lessons on the Holocaust. Includes:
- Assessment PowerPoint's (Slightly different formats)
- Mind map worksheets for pupils to complete on the Warsaw Ghetto and the significance of the Holocaust
- Information sheet on the Final Solution
- 2 starter activities which promote discussion
All resources are editable and can be adopted to meet your schools enquiry. Many of these go with my Holocaust map of lessons resource (Holocaust SOW) also found on TES.
A lesson developed through staff collaboration using Lesson Study. Look for the other similarly named lessons.
- Fully resourced
- Fun and interactive
- Designed for all abilities (including SEN)
- Pair/Group work focused
I delivered the lesson as follows:
Starter: Inference Picture Task. Get pupils to try and suggest what may be happening in the picture (e.g. The White Cliffs of Dover suggests it’s in Britain etc)
Main Tasks: Quick question video clip in which pupils watch the film and write down some basic answers. This is used to set the scene.
Group Work: Get pupils into groups of 3. Prior to the lesson stick on one side of sugar/A3 paper the resources I have included (sources for invasion). Also pupils should read the 'Instruction sheet legionnaire' to gain an understanding of the task. Then give the pupils 15 minutes to plan. After this use the PP to bring up the scenario slides which may put a spanner in their planning. I do this every 5 minutes.
Plenary/Consolidation: Pupils are to use the sentence starters to write an extended piece of writing about the invasion of Britain. Also, use the link to the BBC to see how accurate the pupils were in their exercises.
A collection of 4 tasks to help support your SOW on Slavery:
1) An inference task on the journey slaves took after being captured in Africa
2) A slave ship activity in which pupils design their own ship and think about what was included for the journey
3) A memorial activity to complete at the end of the SOW
4) A creative task on plantation life in which pupils read the sources and draw details from it
A complete lesson which gets pupil to use their source skills to investigate an enquiry question.
I have used this for both an interview and for observations - succeeded in both. Pupils enjoy it too.
This is an assessment I use at the end of a year 9 unit looking at the significance of the Holocaust. All you need is some A3 sheets for the pupils and the worksheets attached.
A lesson that looks at significance and, in particular, individuals who are deemed important. Pupils watch the first 10 minutes of the BBC YouTube documentary on Brunel (Greatest Britons) and then debate using resources why he is deemed significant. They rate him according to criteria and summarize their thoughts.
It never fails to amaze me how much children enjoy a good murder investigation! This lesson is an introduction to how historians 'do' history. Pupils are introduced the concept of inference during the lesson. It also has a literacy twist in that after they have investigated the murder they have to write a piece of discursive writing.
A fully resourced lesson on the Ancient Greeks which includes:
- Gap fill activities as a starter
- Outcomes and progress towards it
- Fun activity whereby students assess how dangerous the events where in the Olympics
A fully resourced lesson with:
- A fun hook/starter were pupils place bets on Ben Hurs Chariot Race
- Detailed skim reading and scanning tasks to help develop key literacy skills
- Engaging gladiator resources and task
- Links to progress and outcome throughout
A superb lesson I have used for numerous observations before. It works well as it is well paced, has group work and helps pupils consolidate their knowledge at the end with some extended writing.
You need some sugar paper or plain A3 would do. Stick the picture of a Motte and Bailey castle and the Stone Keep castle on either side of the sheet prior to the lesson. A good plan of how to run the lesson is below:
Starter: A map image is displayed showing Norman castles that were built by William the Conqueror. Pupils asked questions about the map e.g. What do the locations of the castles tell you about England at the time?
New Learning: Learning objectives displayed and pupils record the relevant one for their target grade into their exercise books.
Pupils watch a short clip about Norman castles and then answer some questions about them with the aid of a PowerPoint slide.
Learning development: In pairs, use the sugar paper to explore, analyse and consider the effectiveness of Motte and Bailey and Stone castles. Afterwards, pupils stick their own versions of the castles in in their books and complete a series of levelled activities.
Plenary: Think of a 15 second sales pitch you would give William about why he should invest in each type of castle to help him control the English.
Revisit Learning Objectives: Pupils consider how/why they have met their learning objective.
Though this is designed for History, it is adaptable for any KS4 and 5 subject.
I found parents were really positive to have an A5 sheet to take away with key dates of the exams, links to revision websites/text and other information such as the specification.
A comprehensive (20 lesson) and coherent SOW which includes:
- Lesson objectives for each lesson
- Suggested activities with some linked to named textbooks when required. Though the document is editable so you can amend any lesson you like.
Lesson outcomes also included
An easily adaptable two page lesson proforma that can be used in all schools and key stages.
- Includes sections on the make up of the class - Special Needs children etc
- A coherent structure whereby a background to the lesson and a next steps section gives the observer a clear view of the context of the lesson
- Planning section ensures the teacher covers the main areas they need to do prior to the lesson
- I have left it as a Word Doc so the purchaser can amend the boxes according to their needs and the school
Two starter activities that think about control and the Medieval Norman Conquest of Britain:
- One activity gets pupils to guess the method of control William used. This can be followed up with a discussion about how useful each of them were.
- The second activity is an SEN task based on the P level system.
A two page form that can be used by staff to report suspected cases where a female under 18 has been subjected to, or is in danger of, FGM.
The form has a clear and easy structure:
- Details of student (all key information required for when it is reported to police)
- Details of concern
- Action taken
- Follow up action (with guidance for staff)
This is a coherent way to keep records of any reported cases in school.
