David Hockney art lesson

David Hockney art lesson

Very easy art lesson that will require no planning! I did this lesson with my year 6 class in 1 afternoon. It gives a brief history of David, his interests and inspirations. The lesson is a very easy to follow step-by-step break down of how to paint a David Hockney landscape. The lesson encourages the children to experiment with colour and perspective. My class produced some really nice pieces by the end -one of which I have used as the example on the slide.
Equivalent fractions

Equivalent fractions

This is a lesson I did with my year 6 class on finding equivalent fractions. There are lots of differentiated practice questions with the answers of the next slide. For independent work, there is a differentiated slide which can be printed as a worksheet or the pupils can work from the board (if you want to save paper!). While they are completing their independent work, you can display the slide with the challenge on it which they can complete when they’ve finished. I have included the answers at the end to save teacher time -why not get your class to mark their own work!
Plastic pollution Reading Comprehension

Plastic pollution Reading Comprehension

This is a reading comprehension about the impact that our use of plastic has on the planet. I gave it to my year 6 class that involves inference, retrieval, basing opinions on the text, explanation and more SATs style skills. The reading comprehension could definitely be given to a year 5 or year 7 and 8 class. The answers are included at the end.
Perimeter

Perimeter

This is a lesson that I used to teach my year 6 class about finding the perimeter of a rectangle and of composite shapes. The lesson starts off with a starter on finding the factors of a number. It then offers opportunities to discuss the meaning of perimeter and to model the method. Next, there are slides with differentiated practice questions for the class to do on their whiteboards. The answers are on the next slides so that you can quickly check their work. On the penultimate slide there is the Learning Objective and a challenge to complete once they’ve finished their work. Worksheets are differentiated for LAs, MAs and HAs. I have included the answers for worksheets too to make teacher marking easier or for you to give to your class to mark their own work!
The Holocaust

The Holocaust

These are two lessons that I did with my year 6 class on the build to the Holocaust and about the genocide itself. The first lessons looks at discrimination, anti-semitism and the laws that Nazis introduced to restrict the rights of Jewish people. It ends with pupils writing a reflective paragraph on what we can learn from this. The second lesson looks at what happened in the concentration camps and at different memorials that have been designed to commemorate the millions of deaths. The children then design their own memorial to the murdered victims of the Nazis.
Fossils

Fossils

This is a lesson that I did with my year 6 class about the process of fossilisation (how fossils are formed) and how they are evidence towards species evolving and changing to adapt to their environment. The worksheet is differentiated for LA and another worksheet for MA and HA that involves explaining why fossils are so important and to link to evolution.

This is a lesson on translating shapes along the x-axis and y-axis in the four quadrants which I did with my year 6 class. The lesson includes a mental maths starter, chances for discussion of the method and teacher modelling, differentiated practice questions which can be completed on laminated four quadrant grids and worksheets that are differentiated for LA, MA and HA. I would print and laminate the four quadrant grid for this lesson and for future lessons.

This is a complete lesson that I gave to my year 6 class on rounding decimal numbers with up to 3 decimal places to the nearest whole, tenth and hundredth; it includes differentiated practice questions which can be done on whiteboards (with answers on a separate slide), a (differentiated) worksheet slide which you can print off or get your class to work from the board and choose their own level. The lesson also includes a slide with the answers to save our valuable teacher time. Why not get your class to self-assess at the end of the lesson? The lesson is differentiated three ways for lower attaining, middle attaining and higher.

This is is the third lesson I did with my year6 class on dividing fractions. It’s a PowerPoint lesson (which contains animated slides) plenty of visual explanations of dividing a fraction by a whole number (by finding the equivalent fraction) and also the quicker method. Prior learning recommended: equivalent fractions and putting fractions into their simplest form.

Rounding numbers year 6

Rounding numbers year 6

This lesson starts off with two opportunities to discuss the method of how to round numbers. The method I usually teach my class is to circle the place value column you are rounding to. For instance, if you are rounding 456 to the nearest ten , circle the 5. Then underline the number to its right and this will tell you whether you round up or down. The PowerPoint then moves onto differentiated practice questions (answers on next slide so you can check the children’s whiteboards quickly). The final slide has steps to success and a challange question for the class to complete when they have finished their work. The worksheets are differentiated five ways. Two possible options for your LAs (indicated by ), one option for your MAs () and two options for your HAs (). The answers are at the end.
Identify place value year 6

Identify place value year 6

(0)
This lesson begins with an activity to see if your year 6s can remember their place value columns by asking them a few questions like this one: What column in the nine in? (in 1,895,765) It then moves onto ‘Guess my number’ where the teacher first models how to do it by saying: My number has 8 hundreds, 4 ten thousands, 2 millions, 7 units. What is my number? Can you write it in digits. To model this, the teacher could use a place value matt or suggest that the children write out the place value columns to support themselves. Challenge write the number in words. This is then followed by similar differentiated practice questions. At the end of the PowerPoint, there is a slide which has three levels. Blue= LA, Orange = MA and Red= HA. There is another slide which is for children below LA. I usually print these sheets off and hand them out accordingly or allow the children to choose their level of confidence! The answers for each question are included on following slides. While the class are working independently, I display the slide with the Learning Objective, spellings and challenge questions which they can complete when they have finished.
