This starter appeals to all children as it offers a challenge to every ability. A funny character appears on the screen with each section of his body containing a number. The pupils chose a number, such as 10, and make up an interesting way to reach it. Less able children might suggest that 1 + 9 = 10, another child might suggest that 5 x 2 = 10 while a more able child might suggest that 10 = the square root of 100! The teacher selects a child to tap the smartboard and, lo and behold, the body part disappears! This starter is open-ended which means that every child is fully engaged in the process.
