I have been designing resources for many years as I worked with preschool and primary age youngsters with delayed or impaired speech and language skills. The resources using symbols are free. My latest resources which I have illustrated are extra tasks based on Marion Blank's Language Levels (previous ones have been free). They can be used with groups of mixed language ability and are reasonably priced.

Story-boards with text + symbol support

Story-boards with text + symbol support

(11)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Using the program Communicate:In Print you can help children with little speech but lots of ideas to get something on paper. Making story-boards provides the opportunity to elicit ideas, organise narrative, invite choosing, and make the child's idea come alive. The adult can add text later and put symbol support on critical key words. Then an adult can read the text and the child can 'read' the symbolised words to tell the story. He will be practising some important pre-reading skills.

Connectives: because/although

(3)
Illustrated with Widgit and PCS symbols. Children need to associate pictures and explain why they go together. Also to read/guess what the book says from the pictures. All three items useful for discussion and could be used for EAL too.

Number conservation: illustrated activity

(3)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. The bricks are to be built to match the pictures and knocked down by a naughty toy. Work on hand-eye coordination and number conservation. Notes on the reverse of some of the booklets give background rationale.
Number work 10s, change, -teens and -ty numbers

Number work 10s, change, -teens and -ty numbers

(3)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. See Guide for suggestions. Coin cards for the 13/30 up to 19/90 (-teen and -ty numbers) have been included with two different fonts for the numbers. Some children are very distracted by the additions to 1 in Comic Sans, others confuse the 'p' with 9 - especially those who aren't working L-R consistently. The second set is in Rage Italic font which has numbers more like hand-written ones.

Make questions and statements (Widgit CIP)

(3)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Print the NOTES as a sheet for reference. There are several suggestions, including how to use the resource with a mixed ability group with readers and non-readers. Print the MAKE QUESTIONS AND STATEMENTS on card. The little cards will be more manageable if you use full size A4, but they are legible if you print 2-up. Basically it is an activity requiring rearrangement of word cards to make questions or statements but there are other ideas in the guide too.
Numicon shaped price tags for shopping -Widgit CIP

Numicon shaped price tags for shopping -Widgit CIP

(9)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Print single-sided on A4 card. Do not reduce the size of the page or the price tags will not match Numicon pieces. See guide notes for ideas for use. Basically these price tags are for (a) making it clear whether the price has been covered by the 'money' tendered and (b) whether any change is owing. The concept of 'difference' in sums in words or shopping is often a real stumbling block for many children.

Symbol reading subj-verb-obj sentences (Widgit)

(6)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Print 2-up and double-sided on A4 to make a folded 'booklet' (or single-sided on card to cut into separate cards). Each file focuses on a verb and contains four examples. The symbol line targets sentences with a subject, verb and object. Easy to make your own extra booklets if you have Word and CIP available.

Living things - organising information

(1)
A suite of related information sheets with PCS or Widgit symbols to help children focus on animal features and behaviours and discuss the topic meaningfully. Plenty for non-readers. Ideas are adaptable to a different animal pair though this show-and-tell is about dogs and foxes.

(1)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. SIMPLE DINOSAUR BOOK consists of 5 pages suitable for less able children. Print on A4 paper. Print the PICTURE MATCHING GAMES on A4 card, 2-sided. Pairs and Dominos are as in the Dinosaur Games upload, plus a Lotto layout (make extra copies of this page as required). Print the COUNT 1-6 DINOSAURS 2-up on A4 and cut to A5 to make a book (or use for sequencing). Print DINOSAURS 1-5, 2-up, on A4 card and cut to make a set of cards to arrange in order. These can be made into a grid pattern with numerals or dice patterns. Suggestions for use included.
Mind-maps:Tudors,London,forces,materials,time

Mind-maps:Tudors,London,forces,materials,time

(1)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Similar maps can be made with the program Communicate Ideas. These were made in 1-1 sessions with different children to put down their ideas and info for discussion and revision. An example can be re-used and modified for another child. Text or illustrations can be incorporated as appropriate to suit different ability levels. These examples may serve as prompts for making maps on these or other topics. A printed copy can be a starting point for adding new ideas around the edge.

The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark - simplified

(7)
Three resources to help children with impaired language skills understand and benefit from this lovely book used in so many schools. Illustrated with PCS or Widgit symbols. The pages could be presented with a simplified telling. If the CD is available, it is always useful to hear the story read exactly the same lots of times and the pages could accompany this. The song prompt cards for one of the CD songs lists the 'wow words' - listen and find the card, or use the card to sing the song with the instrumental version. The mind-map is a prompt for children to retell the story in their own way.
