French Phonetic Alphabet- KS4/ GCSE

In this resource file: A lesson on the French Phonetic Alphabet- L’Alphabet Phonétique. A fun lesson to use with your GCSE classes when they need a bit of a break, while still doing something useful and practising pronunciation. Or you could use it at the start of the GCSE course, if you intend to use phonemic symbols in your everyday lessons to help your students with their pronunciation. Alternatively, this lesson could be used for Enrichment or after-school clubs for your GCSE or even your A- Level classes. The lesson should take 1.5 to 2hrs to complete, but can easily be split over several sessions if needed. It includes: a PPT presentation (48 slides including answer slides), which is split into 3 sections: Introduction to the Phonetic Alphabet (including practice for each aspect covered)- 16 slides Games/ Practice activities using the full Phonetic Alphabet- 9 slides a final Quiz-21 slides 2 worksheets + versions with answers audio files (the first 8 files are previews of what is included in the .zip folder) Once downloaded, save the .zip folder on your computer, then right-click on the folder and select “extract all”. In this .zip folder, you will find a vocabulary list for the Topic:** Identity and Relationships with others** of the **French GCSE **(teaching starts September 2024). The vocab words included on the list are all from the prescribed AQA vocabulary list. There are 5 pages for Foundation and an additional 2 pages for Higher tier. .pdf and .docx versions included. The list comes as a table with 4 columns: French word, English equivalent, part of speech and IPA notation. The IPA notation has been added to help students with pronunciation and a fun lesson on IPA is available for £2.20 here, if your students are not familiar with IPA notation. In this digital product: You will find a Listening assessment and a Reading assessment for Topic 1: Identity and Relationships with others (GCSE-first exam in 2026). The assessments are designed to be completed during a 60 minutes lesson (the Listening is 20 minutes and the Reading is 30 minutes). The assessments are designed for mixed ability classes and include a variety of Foundation, overlap and Higher questions. They include a range of exam-style questions . The font size used on the question papers is 14, which should be big enough for you to print as an A5 booklet, should you wish to save on paper. Listening assessment: The question paper is 6 pages long (including the cover page with instructions). There are two sections: Listening comprehension and dictation- the total mark is 30. The audio file includes all the questions with built-in pauses. The duration of the audio file is 15 minutes and does not include the reading time at the start and the end of the assessment. The transcript and mark schemes are provided. Note: To make the paper more proportionate, there are only 3 sentences in the dictation, including 1 word outside of the prescribed list. The comprehension section includes 4 words which are not on the prescribed list (mignonne, généreuse, sévère and humour). However, these words will not prevent students from answering correctly. Reading assessment: The question paper is 8 pages long (including the cover page with instructions). There are two sections: Reading comprehension and translation into English. - the total mark is 30. The mark scheme is included. Note To make the paper more proportionate, the translation is marked out of 5. **There are no writing or speaking assessments in this resource.
