A set of activities based on the Book: The Shopping Basket by John Burningham. There is a complete set of small flashcards representing all the characters,places and food in the story. There are 6 activities: Draw the correct number of food items in the basket. Match the animals to the food they wanted from Steven. Match the animals to the places where they appeared in the story. Match the animals to the position they appear in the story. Write a shopping list for Steven. Write a note for number 25.

A phonics resource for children learning about ‘ck’ at the end of words. There are 2 worksheets where children use the words provided to label the pictures. There is a sheet with 16 sentences where children add the missing words that end in ck. (S may be added for plurals). They can write these out in their workbooks or just add the missing words onto the sheet. There is a wordsearch and wordsearch answer sheet provided.

3 worksheets where the children name the picture/symbol linked to the weather and then overwrite the sentences. The last sheet is a template that the children can draw or paste into and then make their own sentences about the weather. Early work on adjectives for young children and / or those learning English. A speaking and listening resource for young children to see if they can distinguish between the opposites: empty and full. There are 10 posters to discuss. Print out or / and show on the white board. Encourage children to look around their classroom / environment and find things that are empty and full. Some posters will provoke thinking skills e.g. the swimming pool is full of people but there are no swimmers in it. Some posters could also be interpreted as half full such as some of the coffee cups.

Play this PPT as a slide show with plenty of speaking and listening and questions to ask along the way. There are 13 stories included to share, retell and discuss. There area set of extension activities included at the end. Link to book or reading celebrations and / or use as a basis for an assembly.

Here is an example of an acrostic Christmas poem to give your class the idea. I use a wordbank of Christmas words or pictures to inspire my children. There are 4 examples of writing frames so children can choose their favourites.

Similarly, they could make their list poem in the border or on the lined grid.

Here is a good way to introduce children to Limericks as part of World Poetry Day or any poetry topic. There is an example of a completed limerick showing visual images. There are 2 other limericks where the rhyming words need filling in. Children use the visual images and words to help them. Once the children are familiar with the structure of a limerick, they can use the template page to start to make up their own limericks. Notes: Limericks are traditionally 5 lines and often with a funny final line or a twist. The first, second and last line usually have the same rhyme and the third and fourth often share a different rhyme.

A set of 5 pages of colour flashcards related to the lovely story by John Burningham ‘The Shopping Basket’. Most images are symbols with some pictures. Flashcards include the animals in the story, the food on the shopping list, characters and ordinal numbers. These cards can be used in a range of ways such as matching up the animals with the foods, sequencing the story, ordering the numbers - the cards can also enhance any display work. The games are differentiated so that children can start with 8 items to recall and then move on to 10. Children will use their spelling skills also to write the word or for younger children they can dictate their answers. Extend with more objects and/or real objects covered with a cloth as in Kim’s game.

An activity linked to your transport theme for young children. The activity is in colour and black and white. Children name the vehicles and then match them to the correct words on the grid. Children can draw in the pictures, paste them, write the corresponding letter or write the words. Opportunities too for speaking and listening with descriptions of the vehicles and their uses.

A lovely little matching card game for young children where they name and match drawings and photos of a Winter theme such as a snowman, fireworks and winter clothing. Cut and laminate the cards for durability and reuse. Children could colour in the drawings to make them more personal. Useful too, for displays, drawer labels and speaking and listening work. There are 10 pages with 2 sets of cards on each one.

Here are 4 robots that your class will adore. They come with a poem and some information about them and where they live. Each robot has it’s own colours and personality. Children can gain information from the poem to colour in the 4 robot posters correctly. There is a matching sheet where children match the robots to their names and then colour them in. A set of phonics and writing assessment sheets for children. Resources: Sheets 1 and 2 - Pictures for children to say and write the initial sounds underneath. Sheets 3 and 4 - Lower case letters of the alphabet. Can children say the letter and name an object beginning with each letter? Teacher could write the words for the children or the children could draw a picture themselves. Sheets 5 and 6 - Lower case letter for children to name and write over to assess their handwriting. Sheet 7 is a blank template to be used any way you want for e.g. for children to write letters as you say them or write a word/draw a picture for a given sound.
