A booklet that has explores the whole play, using Baz Luhrmann’s version of the film. For every scene (apart from Act 4 Scene 2,3, 4) I have a screen shot of a key event with a question next to it, linked to a character/quote/theme/event. Most are cloze based questions for weaker students, however I have left space for higher ability to make their own notes. Made for students who were absent/missed study of Romeo and Juliet. Perfect to be used alongside watching the film as a “blast” to enable them to understand major plot, characters and themes within. Note: where the Luhrmann edition misses key things, I have explored these in the questions.

A lesson that introduces the idea of differing narrative viewpoints within a text and explores how reliable these are. I used these as to help students evaluate for question 4. The base text is an extract from Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest, whereby the narrator is a schizophrenic patient.

A lesson that introduces the concept of grammar, morphology and syntax. The start of the lesson gets students to consider prescriptive vs descriptive language analysis, highlighting the importance of A Level focus being descriptive. Then students are introduced to the linguistic rank scale where each one is focused on in detail and with examples. This study is them applied to an advert for Clarins, where students analyse how the grammar and morphological choices impact on the reader, in relation to the form audience and purpose.

Two 55 minute lessons introducing students to key terminology and concepts within discourse analysis, using two transcripts from the Paris anthology. Lesson 1 focuses on Text 11: ‘Visiting Paris’, Mike and Sophia (transcript) and has some question prompts on the slides, followed by some independent tasks for students. Lesson 2 focuses on Text 32: ‘Eating in Paris’ and follows the same pattern: screenshots with question prompts, followed by a final slide of questions for students to consider.

This was produced for a 90 minute lesson, but could easily be shrunk or extended to suit your needs. This lesson involves students watching and analysing three different 2016 Christmas adverts, considering features the writers have used to achieve effect and make use of ideologies. This is perfect for all AOs of the spec, allowing them to apply their skills to a visual form. I will be using the grid to get students to produce an analysis of the adverts, based on their critical understanding (AO4). All links are located on the Powerpoint, which has differentated learning objectives on each slide, and I have produced a scaffolded grid to enable students to write whilst watching. A lesson in which students consider the importance of sentence structures within their writing using video clips from Planet Earth II. Complete with full lesson Powerpoint with differentiated learning objectives (3 levels). Worksheet with the speech David Attenborough says, without any punctuation in. Students to punctuate as they listen to and watch the show, considering the intended effect. This worked so well for my set 2 year 11 class and they thoroughly enjoyed the task!

A lesson analysing the theme of secrecy within Jekyll and Hyde. Involves students completing a 'blackout analysis' (like blackout poetry) to highlight key words that aid to the theme. Students find the words associated with secrecy, then 'blackout' the rest. After annotating the words they've found, they then use this to spark an analysis based on a GCSE question. A whole lesson and resources practicing the AO3 comparison skill through Banksy’s ‘Dismaland’ attraction. I have created this lesson for a high set of year 11 students, however this could be adapted for any KS across school. The lesson focuses around comparison, firstly with photos, then videos, then texts- all surrounding Banksy’s Dismaland. Resources: Powerpoint: lesson with differentiated learning objectives and mark scheme for peer assessment. Worksheets: two newspaper articles for comparison, a sheet to compare two adverts of the attraction, a grid to record language choices in the articles.

2 lessons based on an extract from the Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. First lesson: students analyse the language and structure of the extract, after a starter based on the film trailer. This aids with AO1 and AO2 of the paper. Second lesson: students use the extract to produce a piece of writing in which they travel back in time to their 'past' self. The students loved it! Powerpoint has learning objectives differentiated three ways throughout.

The extract used is on the Powerpoint itself and is rich in language and structural features, such as the paragraphs growing as the martian grows. Task on entry of structural analysis of the soundtrack to the film. Truly engaged my set 2 year 11!
