Form time Jubilee discussion cards

Some (not too controversial) questions I have typed up to make discussion cards for my form for the Jubilee. I’m hoping to have a bit of cake and a chat. I thought we could sit in small groups, I’ll put a set of cards for each group in an envelope, it will start a discussion. My form are year 12 if that helps.

My year 11 love Bigflo et Oli since we did the song Plus Tard and often ask for it. I made this for their song: Dommage First sheet is a gapfill Second sheet is a translation with some words in bold - the idea is the students ocmpare the two versions and underline the same words on the French version

No et Moi model essay

No et Moi model essay It’s question 10.1 from November 2021 paper I wrote the essay myself to share with my students / follow up some recent mock exams we have done. I’ll use some textivate exercises to play with it and do some translation on it too. I have taken photos of the essay plans I wrote, I’ll look at that with my students first so they can see how I got to the essay.

Letter to a favourite teacher

Letter to a favourite teacher

Student use the writing frame to write a letter to their favourite teacher. We have completed the topic of school subjects, saying why you like them etc. This is an end of topic activity. Students write a letter in their book to their favourite teacher (they cannot pick me!). I check it. Then they write it SUPER neatly onto writing paper - I buy some cute paper and envelopes for this but you could just use coloured paper, ask them to illustrate it or whatever. The point is it is hand written and neat and nicely presented. My favourite part: I put the completed letter into the pigeon hole of the teacher. I don’t explain what it is. So the teachers get a French reading activity to do as well!

Introduction of Les Restos du Coeur and their work to year 13. Brief explanation in English. The Restos du Coeur song linked in with a brief listening exercise. Finally a couple of exercises based on the new campaign for Winter 2014. Students watch the video and answer in French, then a gapfill. Could be homework. It took my students about 50 minutes in a computer room - they could control the video themsleves. Answer sheet given.
French GCSE writing on the environment

French GCSE writing on the environment

(0)
A series of activities designed to get students to be able to answer a question on the tricky topic of environment. Starts with single words into and from French and builds up to sentences. Work follows on an example answer for a 90 word question and then students write their own after picking out chunks and phrases from the example. A 150 word writing is the final task. On 4 sides so can be printed easily two pages to a side and on reverse to save paper!

madcatladymadcatlady

Speaking activity about food ( could be used for any language!)

(0)
English sentences about food and diet. Students translate orally into Target Language. They start off simple and build. Can be used for around the class, pair or group work. I usually do this as pair or small group work. First student says sentence 1, second student sentence 2 and carry on taking turns. I use the same sentences several times, the students get quicker and better. Could be a main activity in one lesson and a quick starter the next. While I aim this at GCSE students could make a nice sixthform starter or a challenge for good younger students. 2 versions, one with more challenge.

French guided translation on topic: homeless

(0)
French GCSE worksheet on topic of homeless (social problems). Aim is to use the example paragraphs to complete a Higher level translation into French. Spot the difference activity where students compare similar paragraph about homeless people, highlight the differences between the paragraphs and complete a comprehension activity on each picking out the main points. Students then use elements from different paragraphs (plus a small amount of prior knowledge!) to translate a similar passage from English to French.
French worksheet on topic of going out and the verb vouloir
madcatladymadcatlady

French worksheet on topic of going out and the verb vouloir

(0)
Sentence builder showing the full verb vouloir plus negatives (je ne veux pas, je ne veux jamais) and activities. Students use the sentence builder to write sentences and make suggestions about going out. First ex is completely sourced from the sentence builder, the next ex is similar but has some easy additions from pre-learnt material (days of the week, family members). On the second page there are 5 model conversations suggesting activities and accepting / declining. Students pick out what is suggested, when etc. Finally they are invited to write their own similar to the examples.
Spanish GCSE Foundation Writing test

Spanish GCSE Foundation Writing test

(0)
This is a sheet I made to test my Foundation Spanish on the topic we have completed: family and friends. The first activity is a photo to describe. It’s just a photo of me at my computer (!) because the example one in the text book was a family looking at a laptop so it’s quite similar. You could change the photo! The second activity is the 40 word writing on family and friends.
GCSE French quickfire revision powerpoint
madcatladymadcatlady

GCSE French quickfire revision powerpoint

(0)
GCSE French powerpoints for quickfire testing. Snippets of grammar. A very short snippet, phrase or word to translate and then the answer on the next slide. Designed to be quick and low stakes. Students write answers on mini white boards and hold up. Answers could also be given orally or just written as a list in books. English to French too hard? Do the powerpoint backwards! I use my clicker to change slides quickly. These are ones I’ve used with my own classes. There is a foundation (or easier) version and a higher (or harder) version. I use this activity again and again with the same slides (they get better at it). It’s a starter or a good time filler if you have a few minutes and want to get some energy back in the room. I do 10 minutes worth and then stop wherever I got to (or it gets boring). I use the same one for year 9, 10 and 11. It’s not pretty but it’s effective.
