A critical analysis of The Courtship of Mr Lyon - taken from Carter’s The Bloody Chamber collection. The analysis covers AO1/2/3/4/5 for OCR A Level English Literature, but these AO’s are easily transferable to other exam boards. Some comparative links to Dracula as this is our comparison text.
Based on the look, say, cover, write, check system, this booklet is Term two of three which will take spellings tests throughout the entire academic year. Each week has a different topic and gives pupils three chances to check their spellings of each word.
Also attached are the spelling slips for the 12 weeks of this terms booklet, in order for your print the weeks' spellings out and give them to pupils a week before their test.
The booklet also allows you to easily keep track of scores with a big score counter in the corner and allows an observer to recognise whether you have awarded commendations/merits (whatever you use!)
This resource is easily adaptable for differentiation. The first page is the actual PEEL table in which you can add or take away as much support as your class will require. The AO's link to Edexcel as we, as an Academy, have brought the AO's down the key stage three.
The second page is the examination question with a model answer to support pupils in considering how to structure their assessment and the level of analysis required.
This is a lesson used with bottom set year 7 who require a lot of help and scaffolding. Based on the section in Boy by Roald Dahl, towards the start, in which he describes his school. Pupils read the section and then answer some comprehension questions, followed by planning and writing a description. Attached also is the writing frame I used to support the pupils in their planning.
This lesson is an end of a topic lesson based on the shooting of Lennie. Pupils will learn how to write an eyewitness account based on Of Mice and Men. I used an update to date issue as an example of an eyewitness account from the terrorist attack at the Bataclan theatre, Paris; this ensures pupils are using a modern resource but you can also discuss British Values. I used this with a top set year 9 (low achieving school) but it is easily adaptable. Includes Powerpoint and differentiated resource.

This is a booklet I created for a CPD I led on 'Writing for meaning'. It features information and details for staff of how to teach different types of writing (transactional writing) - including example tasks they could ask pupils to complete based on the type of writing they want to include in their lessons.
A Gothic Fiction scheme of work for Key Stage 3 English. This five week scheme, which can be easily extended or shortened, comes with 4 lesson objectives for each week, differentiated tasks/homework for higher/middle/lower pupils, the differentiated outcomes for each of these pupils and assessment tasks too. This lesson is based on the SAMOSA techniques used with the opening of section 2 in Of Mice and Men. Pupils annotate, analyse and use this knowledge to create their own piece of descriptive writing. Used with a top set year 9 (low achieving school) but easily adaptable.
Used with bottom set year 7, also doing the fresh start programme, reading The Memory Cage by Ruth Eastham. This PPT is based on the first chapter, reading the opening chapter, discussing Alzheimer's, answering questions based on the chapter and writing a description of a family member. Attached is also the writing frame for the pupils.
