I am Head of Social Sciences teaching AS/A level Sociology and Psychology. For many years I’ve taught History through to A'level and Archaeology through to GCSE and have been Citizenship/PSHE coordinator. I am currently an accredited Lead Practitioner (leading on Stretch and Challenge), an AQA Senior Examiner for Sociology Paper 3 and an AQA EPQ Moderator. I’ve authored an AS/A level Sociology Revision book for Paper 1 (AQA), published by Collins - for the current 2015 Spec.

Black Death - How can it be cured?

I created this lesson for my Year 7s, having studied the black death, with followed this up by looking at ideas for how to cure it, how successful these were and ended with an Apothecary activity.

I created this for my Year 7 class, I particularly wanted to build upon source based skills - interpretation and analysis concluding in the students drawing their own informed and developed conclusions about King John.

I began Psychology Film Club as an enrichment activity. It took off and turned out to be a good idea. Students can bring popcorn, and you could introduce gold cards for regular attenders. I have included a list of films and their links to part of the course (watch the age category obviously). I have also included the various posters advertising film club,

I produced this unit as a whole Tudor Day. I have included the PowerPoint that saw me through the day and the day plan. There are a number of resources referred to: 1. Family Tree 2. Walk round Tudor England 3. Speed Dating 4. Henry VIII on trial. The additional resources are included. This was delivered to a group of very able Yr 5-6s, but would also be suitable for Yr 7-8s.

This powerpoint covers essay planning and developing lines of arguments. I used the specimen, with markscheme and examiners report to model the first essay together as a group. Then printed out the remaining essay titles onto A3. As per the instructions on the powerpoint these titles travelled around the room.

Social Sciences: Recommended Further Reading

To encourage additional reading beyond the AS/A Level Text books, we send out a list of recommended further reading to students and parents, along with display in the library and on the school website. Around the department, I also have a display of recommended reading - see posters. During National Reading week, this becomes a homework to have sourced a further reading book! Sociology (AQA) Psychology (AQA) Politics (AQA) Philosophy (AQA) Criminology (WJEC)

Year 12/13 Psychology Assessment and Tracking Sheets

I use these Tracking and Targeting sheets with my 6th Form Students. They transfer the comments that I have made on their work onto their tracking sheets. The idea is that the students and I can easily track what they need to do in order to move in. This can be kept at the front of their files, or in may case I keep these in an folder attached to the wall - easy for me and my students to access. I also ask them to look at their tracking sheet before they start the next essay/LAQ and write the target at the top of the work - to focus them!
