This is a great drawing lesson that really extends your students' understanding of drawing and helps them take their first steps into abstraction and expression. You might need to adapt it to suit the literacy level of your pupils, but it is suitable for Key Stage 2 or 3, in fact I've seen it adapted for KS1. I've revised and updated my baseline test to include measuring across the four main attainment areas of Making Skills, Ideas, Knowledge and Evaluation. My test takes only one lesson to complete plus one homework task and marking is done in the lesson itself. I've used this test for years and I know it works well. This 3D sculpture unit focuses on creating a whole class 3D mural in the style of contemporary artist Tony Cragg whilst at the same time teaching colour theory and craft techniques. It develops visual literacy and the ability to analyse art work and incorporates three different ways of making the final piece from cheap, common everyday items. It is slightly more expensive due to copyright royalties of Tony's work, but you will have a great school mural at the end of it. It comes with a student booklet, photocopiable resources, presentation, lesson plan and templates for making a large classroom art piece.

Pop Art gets a 21st Century facelift! This a Contemporary Scheme aimed at improving thinking skills and asks deep, Essential Questions of your students to learn how Modern Art has evolved into a thriving contemporary movement. I’ve taught this unit to young children and exam classes alike with great results. Crucial to the project's success is the student refining and developing their ideas in light of peer and self evaluation. This project is very motivational and can be used year after year with constantly different results, my students loved it.

Suitable for most age ranges, this very flexible project combines digital photography with the art of observational drawing. It is a great project for getting some quality, expressive drawing work in student’s portfolios at exam stage or for teaching younger students to ‘see’ more closely. A very expressive and open lesson, students are free to express what they see in a variety of styles. I've had great results from this as a topic for less able students or teaching experimentation with materials. I've used it as a GCSE project and in the Primary phase. It's easy, effective and fun!

This lesson challenges students to invent a secret language then use it to draw in an abstract way to communicate words and phrases in their own unique style. By comparing this to abstract artists they will be able to better understand the language of drawing. A project that combines digital techniques with observational drawing. The lesson teaches students how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements by means of a detailed step-by-step exercise. You can use free online software if you don’t have Photoshop (links included). There is also a detailed guide to drawing faces from observation with supporting worksheets. The skills are then combined into a fun Surrealist Dream project. This is especially liked by the boys, they LOVE doing the Photoshop side of the project. I've had great results teaching this project and so will you. It also comes with links to artist resources on Pinterest.

This lesson is well loved by children and uses my own secret techniques for making 3D animals that gets great results! It contains a Lesson Plan, Powerpoint presentation and teacher instructions and shows you in a clear, step-by-step guide how to make beautiful clay animals. Includes a ‘How to Make your own air-drying clay’ recipe so you can use this even if you don’t have a kiln. My students love doing this at Primary and Secondary level, everyone loves making animals!

Learn about the fabulous birds of New Guinea and how they have evolved into some of the most stunning creatures on the planet. Teach sketchbook recording techniques, art methods and my own technique of making birds using PVA glue. This is a lovely craft project for younger art students and is such a huge topic, it can easily be developed into a cross-curricular theme with science, geography and maths.
