Students work out the shortest path between A and G on the diagram. I used this with my year 8 class as a starter.

Here is a starter I have used when teaching fractions/fractions of amounts. It involves working out the fraction of the cost of a PS3 various family members will pay towards a present. Could also be used as a plenary.

A 9 by 9 grid that reveals patterns from the sums of the mutiplications of the numbers. Students work through the w/sheet that I have created based on the website's activity and produce all the different Vedic patterns for each digit from 1-9. I can&'t wait to use this... Here's a starter task I created using Batman & Superman and Shrek & Donkey. The idea is for the class to use a Venn Diagram to compare the 2 superheroes/characters. I have used this as a starter to finding the HCF and LCM of 2 numbers as well as a starter to teaching Venn Diagrams

This is a 'Connect Thoughts' board. The task is played like the 'Connect 4' game where the class choose any 4 tasks to complete in a row. The rows of questions are leveled and is a great way to differentiate, I have found.

A mathematics version of Pictionary. To create the game cards just print off the slides (4 on a page) and then double side them.

Here is an idea I got from Paul Ginnis' 'Teachers Toolkit'. The codebreaker task gets students to use their algebraic knowledge to crack a code. I put the code up on the board and hand out envelopes in groups of the equations for the groups to work on. Each letter corresponds to a number. Code revealed is 'Focus, Learn, Achieve'.

Another set of calling cards I have used with my classes. This time the cards have the 3 trigonometric ratios. I put example questions on the board and then ask the class to put up the card which has the correct ratio on it that we would use in the question.

A set of 3 calling cards I give to my students. They each get a set of three cards. I then put examples on the board and point to a specific length of a triangle. The class then hold up the card they think corresponds with the length.
