Where the wild things are by Maurice Sendak English writing unit. Use this fantastic resource suitable for year 2. Closely linked with the national curriculum year 2 TAFs for the expected level and beyond. Pupils will be able to write creatively using inspiration from the book such as narrative, diary writing and instructions. The main genre focus is instructional writing in a creative way. The resource includes an exemplar instructional text called how to trap a wild thing. Pupils can use this as a guide to write their own instructions such as how to tame a dragon, or how to become a kind of the wild things. Daily lesson plans and differentiated resources are included in the unit that is over 5 weeks. Reading is also embedded in the unit to develop comprehension of the exemplar text. Pupils are encouraged to internalize the text by using a text map. Sen provision is also available to support pupils with learning.

Introducing cursive writing to years 1 and 2. By the end of the key stage children should be using a consistent legible cursive handwriting style to achieve greater depth. This resource is a good aid for classrooms to support teachers and pupils to remember the joins, and which letters to leave unjoined. The resource is useful for classroom and table top display. It can also be used to introduce all the joins correctly. In year 1 children should be reminded to form each letter correctly, with spacing and correct size. Year 2 should begin to join consistently.

Great visual resources suitably differentiated for year 1. Read the Blue Balloon and sequence the pictures and use time connectives to retell. Write a list and captions using words to describe the balloon changing shape. Link to the new curriculum and used expanded noun phrases and or adjectives. Use phonics and sounds to match words to pictures. As creative starters to the unit -teachers can write a message on a helium balloon from each child and release in outdoor playground - ‘This balloon is indestructable. Please look after it!’ Wait and see if anyone replies to the message. Blow up a balloon and release in hall for inspiration to dance and movement in P.E. Also includes ideas for problem solving in maths using balloons as inspiration.

The Tunnel by Anthony Browne English Writing Unit. An excellent 2 week unit of work for KS1/Year 2 to teach about bravery, sibling rivalry, compassion, similarities and differences. Rose is afraid of the unknown but she faces her fears to rescue her brother. This unit teaches diary writing, poetry, and creative narrative writing. It is suitable for year 2 , (although easily adaptable to years below) and closely matched to the TAFS and standards. There is an example of writing provided for written lessons. Lots of immersion activities are included so pupils can demonstrate empathy with the main character. This allows for pupils to write deeply and creatively and for Haps to achieve greater depth. .

Teaching Dragon Poetry and descriptive writing to year 2 will be extra fun following this outstanding unit of work. There are excellent creative ideas included in here, to enthuse children into writing interesting descriptions of dragons, and supporting them to writing missing posters about different types of dragons they’ve created themselves. They will begin by going on a dragon egg hunt, write a poem about what’s inside the egg, and then use the book ‘To Tell A dragon’ to write their own poems using a similar model. Find brilliant resources that are well differentiated to meet the needs of SEN and EAL. Haps are challenged with high level vocabulary and use of similes. Suitable for the teaching of the new English curriculum and can also be easily adapted to Year 3 as the text has ambitious description. Year 2 Guided Reading This is a complete 5 week unit of work around the text Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish. It is suited to guided reading taught in a Reciprocal Reading approach. It is also useful to use to practice SATS style questions for Year 2 working at greater depth and within. Also adaptable for year 3. The story is linked to materials, science and rockets, and sustainable environmental issues. It is very suitable for boys because of the dinosaur theme. It is also a good book to use if you are doing a fossils unit or learning about climate change. The questions are written like the Paper SATs method, where there is a short text and then questions to answer below. The other included resources for each week, support additional activities that you may consider doing as a carousel during your guided reading independent work. A character description in week 5 is included to support creative writing opportunities. Definitely a good book to move on reluctant or EAL readers . This is a Tes recommended 5 star resource. Year 2 Reading and Writing- poetry New English Curriculum This fabulous resources has an array of classic poetry with comprehensions. The sound collector has differentiated comprehension for higher ability (working at greater depth) and then differentiated down so that all the class can access and enjoy classic poetry. Children answer literal, inference and evaluative questions about the poem. After that , they spend a day creating their own verses using similar pattern structures. There are also other many fun and enjoyable poems to learn and perform by Roger McGough, and Valerie Bloom- such as The River, and other sound poems. Children can recite these, perform them and offer opinions about them. Children will learn how to identify rhyming words and generate their own. Africa Year 2 unit about stories in a cultural setting. If you are looking for a new unit of work with excitement, culture, story, film, art links and research, - then look no further. This is a 3 week unit of work to link with a topic on Africa (or it can be taught stand alone). The planning included opportunities to learn an exemplar rewritten and condensed text using the ‘Masai and I’ story as inspiration. Children have the opportunity to imitate and innovate and then invent their own text. The resources included have excellent visuals to research from. Suitable links to real life Masai have been given as short film extracts to take notes about the cultural lifestyle, food, pets, schools of this tribe. This is an excellent and interesting unit to engage boys. Other links such as art have been made clear - whereby children learn about Kente cloth as worn by people in Kenya, create a traditional necklace and paint Masai dancers. As well as this, a guided reading text has been included in the unit to support reading for ‘working at’. Year 2 English Writing Unit This is a unit of work based on Monsters and a short clip. There are two weeks of English Fiction planning that incorporates immersion activities, imagination ideas, and opportunities for children to write simple poetry about feelings of fear. The unit then moves on to watching the short clip and planning ideas for a narrative. Children describe the monster, where it has come from and write their own adventure story. ‘The day I found monster under my bed.’ The resources includes ideas of how to use the monster theme for topic work including DT and making a pesky monster punch drink, and thinking of ideas about how to trap a monster. Please also additional linked resources called ‘How to trap a wild thing.’ in the shop for Instructions only. Their are also ideas for monster ink art and science inflatable monsters ideas in the Powerpoint. It is considered useful to set children a holiday task/project before the unit commences and this has also been included.

This document is to support teachers with feedback and marking. There is an example Powerpoint of good quality feedback and the pedagogy behind it - with children's work, next step marking, self assessment ideas and positive feedback language. There is also a bank of 'Next Step Marking' ideas that have been created to support teachers in their feedback to children that allow independence in revising their work. If marking is over explicit, then parts of the writing may be disqualified. It is highly recommended not to over mark and train children to understand teacher feedback e.g. Use varied sentences for effect on the reader/audience (means that the child has to use questions, commands, statements and exclamatory sentences). The detail in brackets is displayed in the classroom and given as verbal feedback to child. They then go away and improve their writing accordingly. This documents will give you more open bank of statements to use in your next steps (so moderators can't say the feedback was too explicit), and not use that piece of work as evidence for the child meeting the expected criteria (or above greater depth). Suitable for KS1, but can be easily adapted to Year 3 also. Hope you find it useful for your teams and use it to promote independent editing, revising and improvement of work.
