Teacher of D&T and Art for 17 years +; teaching A level, KS4 & KS3, with KS2 Primary Liaison.
I love producing active resources for learning in DT - these are all activities that I use in my classroom or have used for cover work for colleagues.
A fun way to introduce a topic or use as a revision tool. Distribute cards to pupils and they need to arrange themselves into a circle or line with the cards in the correct order.
Could be played as a whole class activity or in small groups at the table.
Workbook and Lessons powerpoint to support the designing and making of a Pugly Monster Toy. Both resources are editable powerpoints, to add in your school logos, and accompany the free Knowledge Organiser for KS3 Year 7 Pugly Monster Toy.
Workbook with introduction to working safely in the Textiles workshop; observation task and a true /false quiz.
Lesson Slides with past examples of my pupils developed design work and their completed make. This helps to support the planning process, that when we are designing in DT we are planning what we are going to make.
Lesson powerpoint slides support Literacy with spellings and sentence starters for Self assessment activities.
The lesson powerpoint supports the initial design ideas working through to a final developed design idea, they will then make. Annotation of the design idea for textile techniques, materials and components. Developing drawing and annotation skills.
Some of the slides can be printed out as table resources or enlarged as display pieces, these have been duplicated at the end of the powerpoint to highlight them. There is also an extension practical activity for early finishers that hey will be able to work independently on using all the techniques learned. This does not require a sewing machine, but all hand sewn techniques.
Workbook Prototype pages to practise practical techniques for Blanket stitch and sewing on a button. These provide additional AFL opportunities, and support skills building before completing the technique on the final product, raising the level of finish pupils achieve.
Step by Step photo instructions for pupils to follow to make a reversible bucket hat, in the Lesson Powerpoint.
A skills building make for KS3 - KS4 - option to tye dye fabric to make the hat from [ slides 25-30 cover this in the lesson powerpoint.] Or it could be a recycling make using found fabrics; medium weight cottons will give the best finished result. The make links other parts of the specification together,;woven fabric construction, natural fibres and their properties, dye techniques, with joining and making.
Keywords highlighted in the step of making.
Glossary worksheets to develop Keyword attainment and to allow pupils to demonstrate their knowledge; AFL for teacher to assess individuals understanding. I have used these as starter activities to recall learning in the previous lesson. You could select the words they complete, or let them have free choice.
Skills building - Bucket Hat construction record, pupils to complete after each practical lesson to rag rate their outcome. Creating a step-by-step production record to support NEA KS4 work, where they state the steps of making and reflect on the techniques they could improve. This will help focus them on Quality Control outcomes in this and future makes.
Summative Assessment Sheet - linked to GCSE 1-9 making grade criteria. This could be self / peer / teacher assessment. Learning Objectives of techniques are listed, I use this to highlight areas not achieved so the pupil can see in ‘pupil speak’ what they could do to further develop their work.
The supporting worksheets are proven in my past pupils NEA to develop their skills to be able to be successful. The scaffolding of the sheets allows pupil to record their written content without it feeling like an onerous written task.
Knowlege Organiser - Editable if you don’t resist dye the tye dye fabric and need to change the keywords.
Powerpoints the text and images are editable.
All photographs are my own.
A physical paper pattern is not included in the resource - On SLIDE 2 in the LESSON POWERPOINT NOTES there is the LINK to the FREE DOWNLOAD BUCKET HAT PATTERN I used to make the hat in this resource. :-)
Please leave a review if you download - to support my development of future resources :-)
One of my favourite series of lessons to teach, using a group activity for the class to be the production line of an Origami Shirt Factory. This practical activity takes **very little prep **- paper, felt-tips, glue stick and the pupil worksheet.
The pupils love this activity and it provides them with first hand knowledge when adding the shirts they have made to their worksheets with the manufacturing information annotated around them.
Lesson Powerpoint has two starter activities to get pupils thinking about Volumes of Production, along with my step by step photos of how to make the shirts with the adaptions they need for each method of production. There are teacher notes on the slides to support you organising the activity in the classroom.
With information slides to introduce keywords and show the different set up & unit costs for each production method, that pupils can use to support the annotating of each production.
Worksheet has the the two starter activities on, pages for each production method and a glossary table for pupils to complete the defnitions to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.
Scale of Production - Adaption task worksheet. I used this as a homework activity. It includes a wordbank of materials and components to help pupils think more widely about the design task.
Second Activity for Batch Production - Textiles Practical. Powerpoint with the activity instructions and outcomes expected from each Batch Factory.
I set this as a cover lesson for a year 10 class, the cover teacher and the pupils loved it. They made brilliant candy cane mice. Pupils were able to demonstrate their knowledge of how the production line needed to be organised, producing quality products that they then took home after the judging of the winning factory.
Small amount of prep for this activity - resources felt, buttons, embroidery and sewing machine thread, scissors and needle. Slides printing out for each factory - Task and outcomes, Workers of the factory, material & component resource pack, Mouse paper pattern.
An introduction to paper modelling / prototyping to create a 3D bodice. Students experiment with paper folding, kirigami, joining circles etc and then developing the paper bodice using them. Good introduction to surface manipulation and 3D construction.
Originally developed for KS5, but had really great outcomes with KS4, the photographs on the blue background are KS4 work.
Plastic drink bottles used as a mannequin to hold the bodice securely; with a little bit of water in the bottle they provide a stable base to work on.
Created as a series of cover work lessons, introductory power point with two student worksheets at the end, to facilitate the designing process. I have also laminated and attached the sheets with split pins for use when there is no IT access.
Pupils to consider what they would be like as a Super Hero, design their costume / gadgets etc. Consider who their arch enemy would be, and produce a comic strip adventure.
Pupils really enjoyed the work, and the fact that it was a series of lessons, producing some very detailed work.
Please review, if you download :-)
Textiles Novelty fleece hat, pupils are working to a design brief & design specification where they can select their own Target Customer. The lesson powerpoint has lots of pupil outcomes showing how they have been successful in meeting the brief & specification.
Lesson Powerpoint introduces the Design brief & specifcation, research that includes Analysis of Existing products with a homework task for inspiration / moodboard images, to support the initial ideas and final developed design & annotation. This is to develop pupils understanding of all the different materilas, components, themes they could use in their own work. Covers the basic structure of the hat, and supports the making in the design process - helping pupils understand how imagery will need to be place to be successful in the making.
Photographs and text are all editable in the powerpoint.

Active whole class revision activity, the slides have x60 matching pairs of textile terminology, equipment, processes and techniques.
The powerpoint is fully editable, on each slide there are two matching pairs.
My year 10 & 11 classes have loved this start to a lesson, it’s a great way to energise the class when energy is low.
Before the class I layout around the room/workbenches / table half of the pairs; I usually put a small amout of blutac under them to keep them in place.Have a a little bit of space around them to allow the class to get in and look at them. I then divide the remaining cards by the number of pupils in the class.** [I would sort the cards to diferentiate for the more able and SEND]**
As the pupils enter the room I would hand them their bundle of cards.
I explain to the class we are playing matching pairs, and they will be looking to find the match for the cards they have. As they are placing the cards, I circulate checking the answers taking off any that are incorrect and giving the card back to the pupil to try again.
When the cards are all placed we walk around the room together checking the pairs and I will ask additional questions on that topic as we go.
The pupils are asked to make a note of the pairs they weren’t sure of, to enable them to revise that topic.
Two blank callout shapes slides at the end of the powerpoint so you can develop and add in your own.
Matching pairs could also be used in a classroom display.
A wordbank in categories to support all Learners literacy; at the designing stage with annotation, plans of production and evaluations.
Includes sentence starters and connectives.

A series of inspiration images to aid pupils begin to think about designing a textile product based upon the theme of insects. Work pages for first thought mind maps for textile techniques and components. Fashion templates with annotation scaffolding to support pupils create sketch A&B, and develop a final Design. This is a tried and tested workbook format for my year 11 students to support exam success.
A KS2 to KS3 design brief to make a new pair of novelty spectacles. Resources include a power point to step through the research and designing process with supporting worksheet pages for pupils to complete the work on. This was designed by myself for a primary liaison activity and was successfully used across four primary schools, the exemplar work in the power point is by year 9 pupils who trialled the brief. All of the pupils have enjoyed the brief and made excellent outcomes in both the designing and making.
This could be used as a sequence of lessons or elements used for stand alone lessons or cover work.
Hope you enjoy delivering the content, please leave me feedback so I can continue to develop the resources I produce.
Whole class activity to help pupils be able to see how they could present a wider range of ideas to show their design development, as they focus on the different graphic components - line / tone / colour / composition / typography / imagery.
The pupils need to have started working on their Logo / Design idea, this activity focuses on** client feedback** - introducing that clients can throw curve balls and want to change the direction of work.
There are 40 different client feedback prompts - that cover all the graphic components; colour, line, typography, imagery, compostion and tone.
Print out the pencil shaped prompts on light card or laminate for longevity, Pupil slide to pause and introduce the client feedback. You can either randomely distribute the pencil prompts or let pupils lucky dip for them.
Pupils have loved this activity, you decide how long they have for the pencil prompt before they are returned and redistributed. This allows pupil to develop a wide range of ideas, avoiding fixation.
Also can be used for early finishers as a lucky dip extension activity.
Excellent tool for Revision or AFL.
A fun way to use dominoes to assess end of topic knowledge or use as a revision tool. Activity contains 28 Dominoes and the blank template pages for the information Dominoes to be placed on top.
This could be an** individual / paired or group activity**. This has always been a very successful classroom activity for me, to assess and embed knowledge.
If pupils have struggled on a card, get them to** highlight that card** to review - revise again.
Topics covered are keywords and knowledge for Woven fabric construction, Bonded Fabric Construction and the Fibre Groups.
Distribute cards to pupils and they need to arrange themselves into a circle or line with the cards in the correct order. Could be played as a whole class activity or in small groups at the table.
Resource includes class power point with instruction slide, the dominoes in the correct order for the class to check through on completion and blank domino slides for pupils to make their own cards if they wanted to.
The powerpoint slides are fully editable.
