This Excel spreadsheet contains links to 48 fun and engaging science videos that are hosted on YouTube. These may be used for countdown timers, engaging starters or as instructional videos to accompany a main lesson activity. The spreadsheet can searched using a keyword for the topic that you are interested in. This is a personal learning checklist created for AS chemistry to check understanding of mole calculations. A comprehensive list of AS mole calculations is provided. Students identify what they can do after a lesson or homework as they progress through a topic. At the end both the student and teacher sign to say that the student can complete do these tasks. This is a lesson that works with a very able top set double science GCSE, triple science GCSE or AS chemistry. The levels are based on AS so these may need to be increased if this lesson is to be used at GCSE. The SAS video is played from 2 minutes 30 to around 5 minutes for the starter activity. The Top Gun theme tune could be used as an activity timer. Exam questions are from Edexcel AS chemistry unit 1 but work equally well for GCSE. This is a homework project with 2 optional extension tasks where students research what hearing is. This homework is set at least a week in advance and is used as the basis for a peer teaching lesson which is guided (facilitated) by the teacher. Students may produce a written textbook page or podcast.

This is a PowerPoint that I share with AS students so that they are aware of the grade boundaries. I use percentage equivalents to grade work that is handed in. It is worthwhile bringing to students attention that AS boundaries are lower than A2 despite the increasing challenge in A2.

This is a Socrative quiz that can be imported using the code SOC-12169475. Copy this code and paste it in the 'import quiz&' section of your Socrative room. All 12 questions are graded and given a topic. There are a variety of short answer, multiple answer and pictorial questions. Questions cover fractional distillation, polymers, alkenes, alkanes and what a hydrocarbon is. Results from the quiz can be downloaded and analysed providing for outstanding Assessment For Learning. This is a GCSE graded task sheet on earthquakes, tsunami, P and S waves designed for independent learning. Students play the role of a geological scientist working for company that is designing an earthquake detection system. They need to put 10 detectors around Japan and explain as part of a Dragons Den pitch how they can detect a tsunami. There are differentiated websites provided for research. This is a series of graded C to A* word and symbol equations with answers. Balanced symbol equations are included as are lesson objectives and 3 different starters. Please have a look at the slides and print off those that are the most appropriate as single slide handouts. These are a comprehensive selection of chemistry keywords that students use at KS3 and GCSE. I have taken a lot of time to create this resource so that each keyword is carefully linked to Blooms taxonomy, cognitive demand and grades. This is explained in detail in the comments document. These keywords as a display will not only improve literacy in science but also make students aware of the words that they should be using at a particular target grade. The website Read-able is an outstanding literacy resource providing instant determination of the reading content of material. You paste a website URL or a text (e.g. copied from a PDF or Word doc) and instantly get a range of data including reading and grade (US year group). Add 1 to the US grade to get the UK year group. An example analysis is attached of differentiated websites for a science graded task that I produced for GCSE. This will help in determining the correct level of challenge for students in lesson. This is a graded task sheet designed for independent working. There is differentiation by keyword, website and task. All students make an advert explaining how the materials work and bright and capable students can design their own materials. The grade A website is very detailed and provides stretch and challenge up to A* so students need to be selective in what they read. This is a worksheet on atom economy and percentage yield for GCSE chemistry (grade B+) that is printed as A4 handouts on atom economy and percentage yield. There are three reactions that all make Magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt) as the useful product and so atom economy can be compared along with issues such as toxicity of waste products or reactants. The YouTube video shows how Epsom salts are used in the garden. The formula for atom economy is included. The answers are not yet included and will be uploaded shortly. This is the 6th of my AFL strategies. Tarsia are an excellent and fun way of carrying out AFL. This is because the shape expected is generated if the correct answers are matched up. This is a fun match up activity that provides instant AFL because the correct shape is generated by matching up the 12 correct answers. This can be a main activity or a fun 10 minute plenary.
