Cells - flower parts and dissection

This is a lesson that was taught to year 7 and has KS3 levels 4-6. The learning objectives slide promotes AFL and regular checking of progress in lesson - see my other resources for an explanation. I used a visualiser to demonstrate the flower dissection to the class using Lillies. Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com.

This is a lesson activity that I designed for my year 10 grade D-B class. The worksheet can be printed in A4 then photocopied to A5 and stuck in student books. Task boxes can ticked as students complete tasks. The Natural History Museum (London, UK) website is excellent. Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com

This is a lesson on accuracy that I have designed for and taught to year 7. It can be readily modified to compare accuracy and reliability. It uses an ink pipette dart board as a practical (ink is dropped onto a laminated paper dart board). Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com
Blooms level descriptors for classroom display

Blooms level descriptors for classroom display

This is a comprehensive list of 82 Blooms level descriptors that are printed in colour and laminated. I am putting on these on display around my whiteboard - as shown on the photo provided. Only 5 of the 6 Blooms levels are given equating to levels 3 to 7 KS3, E to A* GCSE. The top 2 Blooms levels are included together. These would work well when used with my AFL resources - see my other resources. Any feedback or suggestions? Please e-mail me at rowan.savage@hotmail.com.

This is a lesson sequence designed to be flexible to suit any keystage, subject or SoW. Peer assessment can be carried out using my peer assessment pro-forma that is in my resources. It could potentially form the basis of an outstanding lesson. Please provide feedback to: rowan.savage@hotmail.com. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.

I came across the idea for lesson menus from a CPD session that I attended and have since put them into over half of my total lessons. I am putting together a series of resources to help more able students in the classroom and I will be adding to this series over the coming year. This resource has been used for a Year 7 lesson on the history of the cell. Please provide feedback to: rowan.savage@hotmail.com. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.

I am putting together a series of AFL strategies and I will be adding to this series over the coming year. This strategy has made a great difference to my classroom teaching and can easily be made kinaesthetic using a question ball (e.g. small soft football or teddy). Please provide feedback to: rowan.savage@hotmail.com. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.

AFL Strategies 2 - Number line

I am putting together a series of AFL strategies and I will be adding to this series over the coming year. This strategy is a new idea that I have had using a number line that I initially created to help students during practicals. I have tried this out with Year 7 classes and they absolutely loved it! A photo of the number line in my classroom (laboratory) is provided to give an idea of how it might look. Please provide feedback to my TES inbox. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.

This is a resource that I created for my year 10 students to think critique their performance on each question of an end of topic test. This can be easily adapted to all types of test for KS4 and KS5 A level. The page setup is A4 so page 2 of the presentation can be printed and stuck into student books. These are printed in 2 slide handouts and laminated they are then stuck to a number line made with red tape and 0.5m markers in green tape. A photo of the number line in my lab is provided to model how this activity may be set up. I have 2 number lines on the floor of my classroom at the front and back of the lab. Useful experiments on speed, diffusion and discontinuous vs continuous variables.

The slides are printed as 6 slide handouts and then cut. Lower ability can compare patients 1 and 2. Higher ability can compare all patients. Patients 3 to 5 pose challenging ethical questions. Use Blooms questioning to further differentiate (compare L4, Justify L7).

This is a LO slide that can be easily modified to all key stages and classes. A photographic example of a students work is provided. The first column of boxes is completed at the start of the lesson. The second column is completed half way through. The last column is completed at the end during a plenary that makes use of the LOs. Pupils write R,O,G in the boxes and show their red, orange or green colour cards. The cards can be left on the table during the lesson so the teacher can check understanding.

This is a version of my teaching menu that I have modified for teaching assistants. It is most beneficial for independent learning and science practical lessons. The TA helps lower ability pupils earlier in lesson and higher ability pupils later in the lesson.

This is a lesson that was observed and rated outstanding by OFSTED criteria. Lesson menus in the main ppt are printed on 2 slide handouts then cut out. LO are printed on 6 slide handouts and then cut. The patient slides are are also printed on handouts and used as cards. Use patient 1 to start with. A practical can be used also and a transplant shown by removing a torso heart and replacing it with a free-standing plastic model.
