Drawing graphs levelled tickbox checklist

(0)
This is a levelled checklist for graph skills that year 7 and 8 students should be able to do. I use this the second time that I teach year 7 graph skills. It helps promote inclusion. Higher ability pupils should be able to complete all of the checklist to a very high level of ability. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Redox lesson plan and activities A2 OCR A Chem

(5)
This is a lesson on redox for OCR A chemistry F325 module 2. The main skill developed is writing and balancing half equations. The lesson that follows is on cells and uses half equations. Slide 9 is a tarsia that is printed and cut out. The youtube clip is a 3 minute periodic table timer for the starter activity. The practical is OCR A practical 23 on redox reactions. Plenarising is thorugh mini whiteboards for equations and scores on tarsia and plenary exam q. This observed lesson was a 2 but has potential to be a 1 if there is sufficient student engagement. Science club activity 1 - Fire writing

(2)
This is one of a series of popular engaging science club activities for students that a colleague and I organise. This is a fire writing activity where students make and use a saturated sodium nitrate solution if they are able (HAZARDOUS). For weaker students this could be made in advance. They then paint this solution onto filter paper and dry it using a low temperature hairdryer and apply a glowing (not lit) splint. This is based on a RSC practical. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

Cells - flower parts and dissection

(6)
This is a lesson that was taught to year 7 and has KS3 levels 4-6. The learning objectives slide promotes AFL and regular checking of progress in lesson - see my other resources for an explanation. I used a visualiser to demonstrate the flower dissection to the class using Lillies. Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com.

REDOX lesson 1 - Determination of oxidation number - AS Chemistry

(6)
This is an AS Chemistry lesson on determining the oxidation number of an element in a compound. The starter is a very engaging potassium dichromate volcano where students describe what is happening (e.g. thermal decomposition). The demo must be done in a fume hood and CLEAPPS safety advice should be considered. Instructions for this practical are on the Royal Society for Chemistry website. The sts version of the lesson is printed 2 slides per page. The lesson has animated answers that show a careful step by step calculations so that weaker students are able to access the content. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

Behavior for learning student checklist

The aim of this ticklist is to help students stay focused and help teachers highlight what is going well as the lesson progresses.\u000b\u000bEach day one lesson is selected to use this ticklist in - starting with subjects where the student has been particularly poorly focused.\u000b\u000bThis should work particularly well for students such as those who are autistic who need to visualise their behaviour.\u000b\u000b The updated version leaves space for positive comments to be made in the lesson. This resource can be given to the student by teachers, their tutors or support staff.\u000b Feedback to my TES inbox please.

This is a graded task on the heart and circulatory system in format of a level assessed task used at KS3. There are graded keywords for students to use as well as clear graded objectives taken from the OCR Gateway B3 biology specification (current for 2013/14). The heart diagram can be cut out by students. The two website links are to a heart song and heart musical quiz - both are YouTube hosted. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Personal learning checklists as a means of boosting exam grades

Personal learning checklists as a means of boosting exam grades

(1)
This is a copy of a 10 minute presentation on personal learning checklists that I gave at the Science Done Right conference at the Open University in Milton Keynes in March 2017. The presentation starts by talking about a 2014 OECD report on teaching that shows that 20% of teachers in the UK work over 60 hours per week and yet schools can still be improved. It moves on to talk about the Shanghai mastery method of teaching Mathematics where all students understand a topic before a class moves on. Personal learning checklists allow teachers to check that students thoroughly understand a topic before sitting an exam. The Excel document is for teachers to use to check that students understand a topic. The Word document is handed out to students so that they can check their own understanding as they progress through a topic. These can easily be modified. The names in the Excel document are fictional but the results are real.

Dingbat engaging starters for science KS3 to KS5

(6)
These are a series of dingbats that I have created as engaging starter activities. They work really well as a short punchy starter that students answer on whiteboards before the 4 minute song finishes that students hear as they walk in (e.g. Bon Jovi, Olly Murs). The words are keywords that are referred back to in lesson. There are dingbats for KS3, KS4 and KS5 on these topics: photosynthesis, respiration, compounds, hydrocarbons and carbonyls (A level). Students could post it note their answers with their names and stick them on the whiteboard next to the image. Please leave feedback.

AS Chemistry - equilibrium

(3)
This is a lesson on equilibrium for AS chemistry. There are lesson grades C to A with clear AFL tasks including a literacy-based Just a Minute plenary. There is an exam focus throughout with the grade A task getting students to apply their understanding to new reactions. The video is the TED Ed Daniel Dulek video on the Haber Process. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

(4)
This is a resource for the OCR GCSE Gateway B3 module designed for an additional class up to grades A and without the challenge expected for triple science. There is a student gap fill for all parts of the module (a copy of the spec is attached for reference - pages 52 to 67). Also included is a heart diagram with labels and 20 marks of exam questions based on respiration and parts of the cell (taken from AQA but relevant to the OCR spec). I will add further revision resources in Easter 2014.
