Acid rain newspaper template and websites

There is a newspaper template with boxes that students fill in using information from the website links. The NSB website is a website that provides symbol equations (very challenging). The Doncaster website is a lot easier to read and understand. I will later add a lesson PowerPoint and keywords glossary.

Gifted and talented series 2 - Lesson menu

I came across the idea for lesson menus from a CPD session that I attended and have since put them into over half of my total lessons. I am putting together a series of resources to help more able students in the classroom and I will be adding to this series over the coming year. This resource has been used for a Year 7 lesson on the history of the cell. Please provide feedback to: rowan.savage@hotmail.com. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.

Cracking, polymers and ethene tarsia AFL activity

This is a fun match up activity that provides instant AFL because the correct shape is generated by matching up the 12 correct answers. This can be a main activity or a fun 10 minute plenary. The topic is hydrocarbons and was used to teach the OCR Gateway C1 syllabus to year 10 GCSE students. Please leave feedback and rate this resource if you find it useful.

Evolution ICT research task - Gateway B2

This is a lesson activity that I designed for my year 10 grade D-B class. The worksheet can be printed in A4 then photocopied to A5 and stuck in student books. Task boxes can ticked as students complete tasks. The Natural History Museum (London, UK) website is excellent. Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com
Nitrogen cycle bacteria information sheet

Nitrogen cycle bacteria information sheet

(0)
This is a series of information sheets on the 3 main species of bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle plus an overview of the cycle itself. Pupils may highlight keywords/ phrases and use this information to create a 6 mark exam question and mark scheme that another pupil answers. 1 mark should be for quality of writing.

History of the cell ICT lesson plan

(0)
This is a lesson plan for an ICT research skills lesson on the history of the cell. 2 timelines are given - one easy and one that is more challenging. Students present their research at the end of the lesson. Alternatively they could present their findings in a second lesson. The presentation skills lesson (see my other resources) could be modified and incorporated into this lesson to structure the presentation. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Accuracy lesson plan

This is a lesson on accuracy that I have designed for and taught to year 7. It can be readily modified to compare accuracy and reliability. It uses an ink pipette dart board as a practical (ink is dropped onto a laminated paper dart board). Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com

AFL Strategies 1 - Learning objectives

I am putting together a series of AFL strategies and I will be adding to this series over the coming year. This strategy has made a great difference to my classroom teaching and can easily be made kinaesthetic using a question ball (e.g. small soft football or teddy). Please provide feedback to: rowan.savage@hotmail.com. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.

AFL Strategies 2 - Number line

I am putting together a series of AFL strategies and I will be adding to this series over the coming year. This strategy is a new idea that I have had using a number line that I initially created to help students during practicals. I have tried this out with Year 7 classes and they absolutely loved it! A photo of the number line in my classroom (laboratory) is provided to give an idea of how it might look. Please provide feedback to my TES inbox. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.
Achievement wall letters for display

Achievement wall letters for display

(0)
I have created an achievement wall that shows student work that has been peer assessed as well as marked by the teacher. Photos of my 2 displays are provided. These displays are changed relatively quickly once a half term or so. See my other resources for an activity that promotes peer and teacher assessment. These display letters are printed on A4 paper then cut and laminated. They are coloured according to levels - blue = 3, turqouise = 4, green = 5, orange = 6, red = 7, pink = high level 7 or 8. Please give feedback to my TES inbox.
Blooms level descriptors for classroom display

Blooms level descriptors for classroom display

This is a comprehensive list of 82 Blooms level descriptors that are printed in colour and laminated. I am putting on these on display around my whiteboard - as shown on the photo provided. Only 5 of the 6 Blooms levels are given equating to levels 3 to 7 KS3, E to A* GCSE. The top 2 Blooms levels are included together. These would work well when used with my AFL resources - see my other resources. Any feedback or suggestions? Please e-mail me at rowan.savage@hotmail.com.
Lesson menu for teaching assistants

Lesson menu for teaching assistants

This is a version of my teaching menu that I have modified for teaching assistants. It is most beneficial for independent learning and science practical lessons. The TA helps lower ability pupils earlier in lesson and higher ability pupils later in the lesson.
Metals, alloys, acids, bases labels for card sort

Metals, alloys, acids, bases labels for card sort

(0)
I have created a laminated chemicals, elements and compounds cardsort that is colour coded and kept in A4 plastic wallets. Red = acid, blue = alkali / CO2 / water, grey = metals, non-metals = elemental colours where possible. I make 6 lots of these so that I have one set per table. They can be used to: (1) make word equations (and by extension symbol equations), (2) sort metals from non-metals, (3) sort acids from bases (4) sort elemental metals from alloys. Many other uses also. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Peer editing templates useful for building on AFL

(0)
Templates are provided that can be readily modified. One template is a GCSE revision template where students are guided to create their own exam questions and peer edit answers. The second template is useful for writing Blooms-leveled answers at Key Stage 3 and includes a wordbank. The third is an AS Chemistry exam question with keyword glossary. All templates include written instructions for students. Peer editing is great when combined with AFL strategies before and after the activity.

Why did the Neanderthals die out? This is a comprehension task based on a newspaper article. I encourage students to use highlights to highlight short phrases and keywords - developing good exam technique.
