Lesson menu for teaching assistants

This is a version of my teaching menu that I have modified for teaching assistants. It is most beneficial for independent learning and science practical lessons. The TA helps lower ability pupils earlier in lesson and higher ability pupils later in the lesson.

Metals, alloys, acids, bases labels for card sort

(0)
I have created a laminated chemicals, elements and compounds cardsort that is colour coded and kept in A4 plastic wallets. Red = acid, blue = alkali / CO2 / water, grey = metals, non-metals = elemental colours where possible. I make 6 lots of these so that I have one set per table. They can be used to: (1) make word equations (and by extension symbol equations), (2) sort metals from non-metals, (3) sort acids from bases (4) sort elemental metals from alloys. Many other uses also. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Peer editing templates useful for building on AFL

(0)
Templates are provided that can be readily modified. One template is a GCSE revision template where students are guided to create their own exam questions and peer edit answers. The second template is useful for writing Blooms-leveled answers at Key Stage 3 and includes a wordbank. The third is an AS Chemistry exam question with keyword glossary. All templates include written instructions for students. Peer editing is great when combined with AFL strategies before and after the activity.

Number line labels

These are printed in 2 slide handouts and laminated they are then stuck to a number line made with red tape and 0.5m markers in green tape. A photo of the number line in my lab is provided to model how this activity may be set up. I have 2 number lines on the floor of my classroom at the front and back of the lab. Useful experiments on speed, diffusion and discontinuous vs continuous variables.

Debating strategies for the classroom

(0)
Debating and critical thinking skills are an absolutely essential component of scientific thinking. I have provided a range of resources to promote debating skills: a lesson plan where students consider the disadvantages of cars and create their own solutions, debating strategies ideas and student instructions that can easily be adopted into a wide variety of lessons across different subjects. Feedback to my TES inbox please. Thank you.

Answering in class student tracker - good for AFL

(0)
This is a tracker that I designed so that I can clearly see which students are not answering up in class so that I include them more during whole class AFL questions and answers. This is an A4 page with 3 tables that are cut out and stuck in the back of student books. I check them when marking books. Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com

AFL Strategies 4 - spider web

(0)
This is a visually engaging and fun method for students to self assess their progress at the end of a class. If more than 1 web is used students could assess their progress at the start, during and end of a task as part of assessment for learning. Slides are printed as 6 slide handouts. This is a series of graded C to A* word and symbol equations with answers. Balanced symbol equations are included as are lesson objectives and 3 different starters. This is a lesson that was designed for and taught to year 7. It can be extended to 2 lessons by getting students to collect data in the first lesson and check the validity of their predictions in the 2nd lesson. Some of the slides can printed as 6 or 2 slide handouts to serve as worksheets or writing frames (e.g. learning objectives, table). Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com.
