This is a double lesson resource. Lesson 1 : practise balancing equations. Slides have been proven to help key stage 4 pupils with this skill. Lesson 2: introduction to conservation of mass and loss of gas mass product. Practical with decomposition of Copper Carbonate.

Concentration and Moles

Here are two versions of powerpoints for lessons on Concentration. The examples will introduce pupils to calculating concentrations in both grams per Litre and Moles per Litre (litre same as 1000cm3, 1000ml, or 1dm3, exam spec prefers 1dm3, good practise for A Level KS5)

Fun Formula, Group Number, Molecular Formula

(0)
This is a worksheet to help scaffold the skill of constructing correct ratios of atoms in formula, based on using group number from periodic table. It also includes a role play of a ‘real chemical plant reactor’ to increase interest.
Group 1 Alkali Metals Practicals

Group 1 Alkali Metals Practicals

This presentation covers main reactions of group 1 metals, with tasks in the slides. It also prepares class for practical, flame tests. It then provides a fun way to remember the colours of Li, Na and K. You must play SMOKE ON THE WATER from your computer… Have fun

Construct periodic table (showing Mendeleev Gaps)

Print element cards (4 per A4 page) Supply pupils with most element cards, except Te, I, Ge and Ga. Pupils must construct groups 1-8 (1-zero) of periodic table on their desk. Gap cards supplied with ‘?’ and group chemical properties. Answer cards for gaps to be printed separately by teacher and supplied to pupils who successfully construct groups showing gaps mendeleev left. (In reality, Mendeleev only left gapd for Ge and Ga and not for I and Te. However, the I-Te swtich is an important teaching point. Monitor whether pupils put Te first or I first, based on either atomic mass or proton number. Then teach about Mendeleev changing order)

Electron Configuration, Class Assessment

Two resources here; mixture of correct and deliberately incorrect electronic shell diagrams for first 20 elements of periodic table. Print in black/white, get pupils to mark in red pen, This reveals whether they grasp what is correct and incorrect (2:8:8:2 rule). Pupil name column for info on atomic and electronic structure. Pass around class during lessons, to collect pieces of information about how pupils are progressing.
Chemistry Appreciation Document (Copying sanction)

Chemistry Appreciation Document (Copying sanction)

This is a useful document. Once one pupil has experienced been asked to write out several lines of this, the whole class will be eager to avoid being asked to do so. It is humerus and also includes many references to scientific content from GCSE curriculum such as atomic structure.
