A great activity that supports oral language development. Toss a coin and then roll a dice to find a topic to talk about. Talk to a buddy, small group or whole class. Can you talk continuously for 30 seconds without pausing or saying ummm, ahhhh, etc? 6 charts with 12 topics on each card (72 topics altogether) 1 chart with 12 topics that are broader (suitable for less able students). Fun, engaging topics that your students will enjoy. Provided in colour and in black and white. A blank template is also provided so you and your students can make up your own game. Also provided is the list of topics that you can print, cut up and put in a container. Students can then pull a topic out from the container (as an alternative to tossing a coin and rolling a dice).

This art activity can be used for any theme, not just as a ‘lucky four leaf clover’. The activity involves your students ruling straight lines between 2 dots on a template. When they have finished drawing all of the lines they can give their artwork some colour. The example shows writing in each leaf, but you can change this if you wish. 10 pirate templates to make stick puppets. 5 boys and 5 girls. Students decide what sort of emotion they would like their pirate to have and draw the face accordingly (eg happy, excited, sad, surprised, angry …) If desired, your students could draw a different emotion on two of the templates (same pirate) and then stick them back to back with the craft stick in between. Then they can simply turn the puppet around during their performances to show a different emotion. This is an activity that reinforces the recognition of high frequency sight words. Display a selection of the flies (on a board, on the floor, hanging, etc). Say a word. Your student(s) must find the fly with that word written on it, and swat it with a fly swatter. So much fun! You will need to provide the fly swat. Stick puppet templates for the story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. 15 different black and white templates. Draw the facial expressions on the people. Glue the templates back to back with a craft stick in between. This way you can flip the stick around to show how the character’s feelings change in the story. For example, one side of the stick can show Little Red Riding Hood happy and the other can show her confused. The fantail (pīwakawaka) features in many Māori myths and legends. This craft activity can be used for any of the stories (or alternatively, for a study on New Zealand birds). Students write or draw on the tail fan and then attach it to the bird. You can add as many tail fans as you wish. Two Options: ♦ Attach the tail fan(s) to a bird that has been cut out. ♦ Attach the tail fan(s) to a bird that is on a sheet of paper (you will probably need a long-armed stapler for this option).
