This student driven short presentation project emphasizes narrating a special trip taken using the preterite and imperfect tenses interchangeably. It is best suited for Spanish III or higher but could be used with a smaller advanced class of Spanish II at the end of the unit on Preterite vs Imperfect. Students compile a list of objects that represent a trip taken and then use them as props to narrate their experience to classmates. Lesson includes specific directions, guided questions for writing their scripts, a detailed grading rubric for you and a listening sheet for students to take notes on their peers presentations.

Ethics in Music: A Study of ethical dilemmas in Pop Music

I wrote this mini-lesson for my community service class. Students were studying ethical dilemmas and the consequences and values compromised when making choices. This mini project sends students searching for pop songs of their choice to identify an ethical dilemma. Included are the criteria for an ethical dilemma, some pre-search scenarios to get kids thinking about what comprises an ethical dilemma, a short song list you could present a few songs from to start and parameters for the students choices. Project takes about two days to do in class. One for you, and one for them. This lesson would be good for a Leadership Class, a homeroom activity in character education or as an icebreaker to a contemporary issues social studies class. This mini lesson was not rocket science, but it was fun and students enjoyed connecting the idea of ethical dilemmas to their favourite music.

This beautiful film is the story of the Count of Albrit, now an old man that tries to discover a guarded secret that one of his 2 granddaughters is not legitimate. The movie is filmed in Asturias, has beautiful scenery and a good plot with valuable lessons although it moves slowly at first. It is probably best suited for a higher level Spanish class or a small class as it will require a bit of patience until the plot gets rolling. Study guide comes in both English and Spanish with a follow up discussion/writing assignment.

If your students enjoyed Under the Same Moon, this film takes the same topic to the next level. 3 stories are intertwined in Mexico, Cuba and Morocco as three children and their families deal with different consequences from the departure of loved ones to the "other side". This film brings up MANY topics of discussion about immigration, dangers of their trips and life for those left behind. Movie guide contains 30 questions in Spanish and English and 7 topics for discussion follow-up. Movie is rated PG-13. A very good film and lots to talk about afterwards with your students!

This PG-13 film started off slow and hard to understand, but after the first 15 minutes proved to be a delightful film all the way to the end. Elena, a young Puerto Rican woman loses her ability to speak Spanish after a stressful argument with her mother. All sorts of complications in her life appear as she is suddenly unable to communicate with those around her except in English. There is a wonderful sub-plot centered on food served at the diner and a little romantic twist as well. I think older students would do better with the film due to the slow pace in the beginning but its totally appropriate for 9th grade and up. Movie questions come in both Spanish and English in chronological order to film, also included are a few topics for follow up discussion.

This is a partner practice for Spanish I or higher level students practicing bigger numbers and fruits and vegetables. Students take turns asking and answering prices of fruits and vegetables in Spanish. Each partner has 8 items and 8 prices to record by writing out the larger numbers on their sheet. Practice takes about 15 minutes to complete in class and is a great warm up or practice opportunity before a quiz.

This activity is designed for Sp II level or higher where students have had at least a basic exposure to forming regular verbs in the preterite tense. Day one can be completed in class the day before or assigned as homework. Day 2 incorporates the principles of Native American Discussion circles, where all students engage in a large group conversation about the best and the worst of past parties they have attended. You will need a "talking piece" (any object that can be safely passed around the room from student to student to control the conversation". I use this strategy frequently to encourage conversations in Spanish with my students and its very effective. Lesson will take the entire class period to run after you do your anticipatory set. Arrange chairs in advance whenever possible. Product includes template for students to complete and detailed instructions.

This powerpoint is designed as an introduction to Indirect Object Pronouns and works best for level II where students have already had some experience with DOP's or reflexive pronouns and where placement of pronouns in relation to verbs is somewhat familiar. This presentation walks students through idenitification of IO's and replacement with IOP's in 1 verb and two verbs sentences. It also introduces students to clarifiers and how they are used with IOP's in sentences. Takes about 30 minutes to present and practice in class. This is a simple one page reference chart of common BUZZ words and cases for using either the preterite or imperfect tense. I usually photocopy it onto coloured cardstock where students can reference it quickly as they are slogging through my packet of fairytales deciding which verb to use. Its not rocket science, but my students tell me its been quite useful to them and that they have kept it through the years as they move on to higher levels.

This simple project works best for beginning SP I students who have completed SER, TENER and Adjective agreement. Students chose a famous person and present them to the class reading their clues. Classmates try to guess the person before they reveal their choice. Presentations become game day as kids try to stump their classmates and earn points for their team. Project includes directions for completion, example for students, and rubric for grading.

Movie Guide: The History Channel Lost City of the Inca

This documentary claims to be 50 minutes long, but is really only 40. It serves as a nice introduction to Machu Picchu, the history of the Inca who built it, how they got conquered and looks a little bit at the stone cutting techniques used to build Machu Picchu and other Inca structures. Movie guide has 18 questions in English that follow the film chronologically and a couple of topics for further discussion. This documentary bounced around a bit, but students will receive a decent overview of the basics on the Inca Empire and Machu Picchu. I purchased this DVD on half.com for $2.00, it was worth it for a decent emergency lesson or to tie in with what you already teach about Machu Picchu/Inca.

This packet is designed as a review for new Spanish II students at the beginning of the year. Each verb has boxes for conjugation, detailed notes for usage with specific examples and a few practice exercises at the end of each section. There is also a list of commonly used expressions with TENER. After all 3 verbs are presented, there are 50 simple sentences where students choose the correct verb from context clues. This lesson works best for students who have already been exposed to the material, as either a review or remedial for extra practice, but could also be used as a homeschool lesson on these three basic but necessary verbs.

This lesson is designed to get students thinking about cultural "norms" and all the different ways good etiquette, customs and rituals are practiced around the world. There are 48 simple statements on a chart for students to ponder in small groups and then guess as to where these practices are considered the norm. Survey is written in English so it will work for teachers of any foreign language, as well as ELL classes. The survey will open up students minds for the wide variety of cultural diversity, and for ELL students give them an opportunity to share out cultural norms from their home countries. This activity would be excellent for the first day of school to open the dialogue and get students interacting. Download also includes an answer key for you to share with students afterwards.

This 40 minute video from the history channel give a reasonably unbiased view of the Aztec empire and an effort to understand their cultural practices as well as documents their conquest by Cortez and why Spain was successful in defeating the Aztec. Video works well for a sub day lesson plan or as supporting information when studying the Aztec. Video is in English, questions are chronologically ordered.
