Partner Practice: IR + Las Tiendas (shops)

This partner practice uses IR + a + place and IR + a + action to describe where various people are going and what they are going to buy. Each partner has 8 people to ask about and 8 people to answer. Students use IR and a number of different places in Spanish like panadería, mascotería, zapatería and the items that can be purchased there. This practice works best when students have learned IR or as a warm up for Spanish II. Takes about 15 minutes to complete in class.

Thanksgiving Day Survey

This is a mini survey that polls your students about their family traditions and plans for the Thanksgiving weekend. There are 10 multiple choice questions designed to stimulate discussion in class as they head out or just return from the long weekend. Survey is written in present tense but could be easily adapted into preterite to give them extra practice. Following the questions is a checklist of things to be thankful for and a few create sentence opportunities for students to explain why they personally feel fortunate. Great lesson for that last day when half the class is already out the door!

This is an excellent mini project for students of 2nd semester French I or higher to practice asking questions and taking information in French. If you have large classes I recommend assigning phone call times over a long weekend as it takes about 3 minutes per student to phone them and give them the information to complete the assessment. Parents love this project bc they can listen in on their student speaking French!

This is a cute little partner practice on family members that students can take turns asking their partner about various people. There are 12 people total (6 for each student) and it takes about 10 minutes to complete. It would be a good warm up before a quiz or as a last activity in a day full of family vocabulary. There is also a worksheet attached you could assign as homework that discusses relationships between family members.

Sugar is the story of a young Dominican baseball talent recruited to play for the Kansas City farm team. It chronicles all the challenges and barriers faced by hispanic athletes and other immigrants trying to assimilate to the American life. This film is excellent and appeals to male students as well as the girls. The movie inspires great discussion and instills compassion for new immigrants trying to adjust while away from family and culture. PG-13 in Spanish with subtitles and in English. DIEGO RIVERA PROJECT: The Making and Meaning of his Murals

(0)
This is one of my favourite lessons to do and one I am most proud of. I received an award for this lesson at the state level in a teaching lesson contest. Students work in small groups to replicate, research and interpret a mural by Diego Rivera. I never cease to marvel at how well their work turns out and everyone learns a ton about Diego Rivera. Great end assessment for a unit on art, or as prep for AP/IB programs this lesson is suitable for Spanish III students or higher. Includes commentary on how to execute the project, detailed student explanation, helpful weblinks and readings, list of murals that are suitable for research, helpful thematic vocabulary for students to prepare their written portion.

Repaso de Verbos Contest : Practice grid for Heritage/Advanced Spanish students

(0)
Sometimes even heritage learners need a little help with their verbs. This quick review grid gives them the present tense of each verb in different subjects and asks them to come up with the past, conditional and future tense conjugations. I use this as a small group activity and then have them trade papers with another team to correct the errors using my key. Treating it as a contest more than a worksheet works better and allows kids to put their heads together on a pile of irregulars, stem changers and other unusual conjugations. Students in levels IV and V can also benefit from this activity as the subject nouns aren't specified and will force them to look to the endings to figure out the forms. Activity takes about 30 minutes to run and correct, includes an answer key for you and them.

A one page quick description of how to form verbs in the FUTURE tense from infinitives. Page two is an opportunity to use the future tense in an essay prompt to describe the world in 30 years. Download contains some simple tables and prompts to practice forming verbs in the future and essay prompt. Takes one class period to complete.

This quiz covers DOP's step by step, starting with filling in the box chart, to identifying DOPs in sentence and replacing them, working with verb pairs, gerunds and finally answering short questions using DOP's. Quiz works best for a level II class that has practiced DOPs extensively or a level III or higher class that is reviewing their usage. (I use this as a review quiz for level IV) Sentences are simple and easy to understand. Quiz is 45 pts and takes half a class period to complete. Answer key is included.

Journalist and author Michael Pollan, who is a food expert looks at our WESTERN DIET and how its affecting young peoples health. Pollan discusses all the different health risks associated with our daily food choices of “highly processed food like substances”. This documentary ran on PBS, is also available on NETFLIX. Its great for a health/wellness class and will definitely get kids thinking about how their food choices (or lack of choices) affect their health and quality of life. Movie guide contains 21 questions in chronological order, a couple of pre watch prompts and a list of suggested follow up activities. Movie runs for two class periods but this lesson could easily be extended for a whole week to give students time to work on and produce some of the follow up activities. Answers included.
