This KS3 project features a design inspired by bio-mimicry/Natural forms and used a pewter die casting method. In the course of the project students will learn to critically analyse existing products, to understand the role of the bio-mimicry and to adapt it to jewellery design. In addition, they will use CAD/CAM as a part of the manufacturing process, and 2D design to create a presentation for the completed product.

This is a differentiated, multi-skill, KS3 project which combines wood work (finger/butt joints), electronics (soldering skills, circuit, components & colour-coded resistors), 2D design, graphics (board game) and product design (a net, packaging and packaging symbols), including homework tasks. It helps students to choose their own level of difficulty in design & manufacture, to take control of their learning, to work individually and as a team, to peer-assess each other’s work, to test & evaluate their work based on the project activities, and to critically analyse & evaluate. In addition, it teaches the use of tally charts, bar charts & flow charts.

KS3 lesson allows Y7 pupils to understand different wood joints and to model example wood joints, to work in a team in the 'factory' to cut and assemble the longest & most accurate Dovetail joint. The lesson included a range of different short activities (such as modeling cardboard joints, the quiz 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?' and the 'Dovetail Challenge' competition) to reinforce pupils' understanding and the knowledge of wood joints and its use.

In the course of the project students will learn to understand the difference between Mortice & Tenon joint and comb/finger joint and to adapt them to the mask design. This mini concept project is aimed to raise awareness of coral reefs dying. It includes: the task description with the Statement of inquiry, Key Concepts, Related concepts, Global Context, ATL skills and student’s e-portfolio with each task outlined, covering Criteria A, B and C. Criterion D can be added, as necessary. This project can also be used in Design Technology, adapted accordingly. The students explore 2 points perspective (Isometric projection), orthographic and digital representations. As a final outcome, the students will create a visual 2D or 3D message that would help to preserve the coral reefs and inform people of the danger, making people/the audience to think of their own actions that have the consequences. The final 2D and 3D artwork could be a coral reef made from recycled and processed waste material, which can be set on the bottom of the sea to function as the basis for a new natural coral reef to form and housing for sea creatures.
