As international schools move on from the Covid-19 pandemic, its impacts are still being felt in the classroom and beyond, and the need for schools to ensure the safety of all their students remains as challenging and important as ever.

Since the pandemic, children have spent more time online, which brings many benefits, but many dangers too. Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is commonplace and can be found on mainstream social media and online gaming platforms. There continues to be an increase of self-generated child sexual abuse images – this includes images or videos featuring children under the age of 18 that are subsequently shared online.

Concerns about sexual harassment and sexual violence between children also remain high. It’s vitally important to understand that child-on-child sexual harassment and abuse can happen anywhere, and you should maintain an attitude that it could already be taking place in your school.

Lockdowns put children at more risk of experiencing trauma, and many children, as well as adults, struggled with mental health.

So how does your school ensure that staff are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to support students across such a range of issues? Many schools turn to Tes Safeguarding, our flexible, online safeguarding and duty of care training package, to provide staff with all the up-to-date training they need.
