Apprenticeships develop people so that they can gain the vital skills employers need. Apprenticeships are usually seen as a way for school leavers to enhance their skills and create a career path, but this way of learning on the job is also a great alternative for someone who wants to change career like myself.  Apprenticeships are a great alternative in allowing people a route into a new successful career without the worry of student debt.

Becoming a single parent, I found myself at a crossroads in my career. My current role wasn't fulfilling enough and my working hours weren't child friendly. Whilst working at my local library an opportunity to work with Sandfield Close Primary School presented itself.  This is what led me to start my career in education. I became a Teaching Assistant and although I had experience from previous roles, I didn't have the skills and qualification to progress further.

My head teacher approached me with the option to become an apprentice and complete my Level 3 course in my working hours. I always thought apprenticeships were for college leavers and not for someone in their forties. This option also ensured I didn't have to spend long hours completing coursework at home whilst looking after my four-year-old. The school organised everything including the funding which was a relief for me, doing the course privately would be out of my price range.

As soon as I'd began the apprenticeship, I knew I had made the right choice. The knowledge and understanding I am gaining really ensures I obtain the skills I need for my role. I feel the apprenticeship has built on my working relationships with colleagues.  Everyone has been very supportive in guiding me through my coursework and topics each month.

I am a year into my apprenticeship and in that time I feel I have learnt so much about myself as well as my role. My confidence has grown and I feel like I belong. The course has encouraged me to take on opportunities and to make new connections. I also feel confident enough to contribute in conversations with other teaching professionals. Becoming an apprentice has enabled me to learn from the experts, observing my peers and discussing with my tutors has been invaluable.

This apprenticeship is not only benefitting me, it is also benefitting the children I teach and the team I work with. I'm looking forward to what the future brings and furthering my career within education.

Tes Institute asked what the school had to add about Lisa’s apprenticeship:
Smita Ladd is the Headteacher at Sandfield Close Primary School:

“Lisa is a fantastic apprentice. She is so keen to learn and develop in her role as a teaching assistant. She makes the most of any training opportunities offered to her and reads widely on various topic areas which support her modules or work in class. Lisa is a reflective learner and is always looking at ways to improve her practice. She makes changes in the classroom following any training as she knows it will further support the children’s learning. We are very fortunate to have Lisa at our school.”
