Tell us about you, why you opted for a career in education, and why you chose to study with Tes Institute
When I was in secondary school, I always wanted to be a teacher. I regretted not following this path and then realised I was only 32 at the time, so there was plenty of time to change that. Having spent 10 years in the business industry holding various management roles, I felt I had a lot to offer students. This, coupled with my belief that every child has the right to a quality education, propelled my desire to teach in a secondary school.
Were you familiar with Tes before you applied? If so, what did you use Tes for before? If not, what was it about Tes Institute that stood out for you?
I had never heard of Tes prior to undertaking the Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course. What stood out to me was the supportive culture of the course and also the ability to manage this alongside working full time.
How did you find the application process?
The application process could not have been simpler. The Tes Institute team were on hand to support my queries and were unbelievably responsive. For me, it was hassle-free and took next to no time. I was kept up to date and informed, so I never felt like I was chasing information.
How has this course supported your professional development and career goal?
Honestly, this course has been invaluable. When I studied ICT in secondary school, it was nowhere near the level of complexity as it is now. Without this course, I would not have had the confidence to support my students. Key to me becoming a teacher was ensuring my students receive a first-class and quality education. This wouldn’t have been possible without the SKE. It has helped me think about how students think, and this makes my planning so much easier. It also makes me appreciate how difficult some subjects can be and consider how I can deliver lessons in an engaging way.
What do you enjoy about how the course is delivered?
I did my course online and part-time. This worked well for me as I could manage it around my life. Realistic goals were set and my pathway tutor was on hand to support where needed.
What do you enjoy most about the course?
What I enjoyed the most was the reflection at the end of each module. It really made me take stock of my progress. I also liked the fact that you were encouraged to find further information independently. This helped me gain a good insight into the role of teachers and helped me identify a portfolio of good resources to use. I also liked the feedback from my pathway tutor; his feedback was invaluable in helping me develop week by week and has also influenced how I have applied myself during my ITT.
What types of support did you receive as a Tes Institute learner and how has this helped you progress?
My pathway tutor was, in a word, sublime. He had sound subject knowledge and an incredible amount of teaching practice. This truly helped me benefit from feedback that has helped inform my own practice. Chris was always on hand and very responsive. Tes Institute couldn’t have done enough. The way the course is designed makes self-directed learning possible and does not leave you feeling like you’re mining in the dark. I knew the expectations and requirements, and also where I could seek support if needed. This was only possible with the way in which the course had been designed.
What would you tell another person who is thinking of applying for this course?
I would say go for it; it will likely be the best thing you do. As well as developing subject knowledge, you’ll learn early and vital teaching skills such as reflective practice, how students perceive things, and what misconceptions could possibly arise during your lessons. This will help you tenfold in your ITT. I would have no hesitation in doing another Tes Institute programme. In fact, I would go as far as to say I miss the course, and without it, I wouldn’t have the confidence I have to teach computer Science.
