Helen's story

Why did you choose Straight to Teaching to gain QTS?

After working as an HLTA and covering lessons I decided that I wanted to gain qualified teacher status (QTS) to become a teacher. It was important to find a course that allowed me to learn and continue earning at the same time and while I considered distance learning, Straight to Teaching was the best fit for me.

What did you enjoy about how the course was delivered?

The online elements were great and available at all hours of the day. Sticking to a timetable kept me organised and balancing two different roles would have been difficult if it wasn’t for the support that I received. My pathway tutor was invaluable, she encouraged me whenever I found anything difficult and was available by email and text if required. Knowing that she would be observing and assessing my progress also spurred me on.

Do you feel that your teaching has improved since joining Straight to Teaching?

I am delighted with the progress that I made and feel that my teaching and subject knowledge has greatly improved since starting the course. For the pupils, it was equally beneficial as they already knew me so didn't have to get used to a new member of staff and it minimalised disruption to their learning.

What would you tell another person who is thinking of applying for this course?

I would definitely recommend Straight to Teaching as it offers an alternative way to become a teacher. Since gaining QTS one of my colleagues has joined the programme and others are looking into the route.
