Tell us why you opted for a career in education?
I chose to start my career in education because I've always wanted to be a teacher. I've always wanted to inspire young children and support them in their life.
Why did you chose to study with Tes Institute?
I chose Tes because when I was looking around at different teaching academies this felt the most friendly, helpful and supported network of people to work with.
How did you hear about Tes Institute and what stood out for you?
I went to the Appleton School when I was a secondary pupil. So I've seen a lot of their advertisements around the school and around the area of Benfleet where I grew up, so I was familiar with the logos, the posters, etc, but didn't know much about it. As I got to know more and more, it was just the support and the friendliness that really came through and I thought they are the people that I would like to work with.
Do you feel that this course has supported your professional development and career goals?
I do. I feel like coming on to this course I knew a little bit about teaching from my previous experiences. However, it really has developed my subject knowledge and my curriculum knowledge, as well as working with a range of different experts in the profession.
What did you enjoy about how the course was delivered?
The online sessions were really helpful, and the way it was laid out was very clear. We had a step-by-step guide on the online learning, and lots of videos, so it wasn't just constant reading. That really broke it up.
Would you say this course has helped build your confidence?
Yes, because before coming onto this course, I hadn't. My placement school was very different to schools that I've worked in previously. It was also a three-form entry and I'd never entered a three-form entry school before. It really built up my confidence working together as a team with those different colleagues and just getting to know everyone there.
As a teacher where do you feel most confident?
I now feel confident I can teach anything really. Whereas before, I thought 'oh maybe I can't teach music', but now seeing and experiencing ITT I know that I can.
What types of support did you receive as a Tes Institute learner and how has this helped you progress?
Everyone was available when you needed them, via e-mail or text – however, you preferred to contact them they were really supportive with whatever you needed. If you had a worry, if you had a query, they got straight back to you. I found the team to be really quick and prompt in their replies.
What would you tell another person who's thinking of applying for this course?
I would tell them to just go for it! Take the opportunity. Although it can be a bit daunting when you first start, just run with it because it really is rewarding, and you won't regret it.
How would you sum up your experience in one sentence?
Something I'll never forget!
