About Stonyhurst
Stonyhurst is the UK’s leading co-educational Catholic boarding and day school for 3 – 18-year-olds.
Founded in 1593, it is the oldest continuously active Jesuit school in the world. Pupils come from throughout the United Kingdom as well as from abroad. It is a cosmopolitan family and proudly British. With children from over 27 countries, its cultural diversity adds to the richness and global outlook of the school community.
Stonyhurst was made fully co-educational in 1999. It has a long history of nurturing men and women of individuality, generosity, and service. Catholic martyrs, war heroes, politicians, rebels, writers, scientists, explorers, and actors are among the former pupils, a testimony to the capacity of a Jesuit education to foster individual gifts and talents as well as academic excellence.
Stonyhurst is based in a magnificent Grade I listed building within a secluded 1,000-acre estate, a rural setting in the beautiful Ribble Valley in the Northwest of England. Stonyhurst is home to one of the oldest museums in the English-speaking world and is steeped in centuries of Catholic history. Today the school offers a distinctive environment where pupils can gain an appreciation of culture and heritage.
Stonyhurst offers a broad and engaging curriculum in the Jesuit tradition, providing an excellent education encompassing both nationally and internationally regarded qualifications. The motto ‘Quant Je Puis’ (As Much as I Can) remains its overarching principle. As a Jesuit school, Stonyhurst provides a foundation for a life of purpose, with an education that nurtures individuality and encourages generosity.
