Our School

The Queen Katherine School is situated on the edge of the stunning Lake District; we are an 11-18 Academy with approximately 1000 students. The school was rated Good by Ofsted in March 2022. Our results reflect the school’s incredible success: top 7% in the country for A level (grades A-B) and top 25% for Progress 8 at GCSE. We have fantastic facilities all located on one, large site providing a vibrant and healthy learning space.

Our school culture is based around being ‘Proud to Belong’, a set of values that our whole community, students, staff, parents and governors, work to develop. We are a school that believes whole-heartedly in developing the whole child and we give equal importance to our academic and whole child curriculum. We pride ourselves not only on our academic excellence, but also on the unparalleled extra-curricular opportunities we provide to broaden students’ horizons and develop the confidence and creativity that our learners need to thrive as they move into a global community.

Our care for students is reflected in all aspects of our school organisation. We invest heavily in pastoral support so that non-teaching pastoral experts – often in liaison with teachers - can break down learning barriers to empower teachers to teach with the highest expectations. Behaviour in school is excellent so our learners reach their potential. We are proud to be an inclusive community supporting students of all abilities and aptitudes in this mixed socio-economic area.

Our teaching culture is based upon ‘excellence beyond compliance’. We believe in the power of collective teacher efficacy using a common language and being clear what it is to be a ‘QKS teacher’ but this is underpinned by a strong ethos of teacher autonomy. We invest heavily in high-quality CPD. We practise an annual Teaching and Learning focus for all colleagues in combination with separate departmental CPD foci led by Subject Leaders.
