Job overview

As part of a planned and ambitious phase of school development, Uppingham Cairo is pleased to invite applications for the position of Head of Professional Learning, Junior School from August 2026. We seek an outstanding classroom practitioner and collaborative leader who is deeply committed to professional growth, staff development and the cultivation of a reflective and ambitious teaching culture. The successful candidate will demonstrate warmth, credibility and strong organisational skill, together with a clear understanding of effective professional learning within a high-performing school.

This role forms part of the continued strengthening of teaching and learning across the Junior School as Uppingham Cairo grows in scale and maturity. As the school looks ahead to the opening of the Sixth Form in September 2027 and to the launch of Uppingham New Cairo in September 2028, it is essential that staff development remains purposeful, coherent and aligned with the ambitions of a leading British independent school. Building strong professional practice and leadership capacity among colleagues is central to this vision.

The Head of Professional Learning will coordinate and support professional learning for all colleagues in the Junior School, ensuring that professional development is well organised, purposeful and closely aligned with school priorities. Working under the direction of the Deputy Head (Academic), Junior School, and guided by the Head of Junior School who holds whole-school responsibility for People Development, the postholder will support the implementation of the school’s professional learning strategy and contribute to coherence across the whole school. The role includes coordination of the Early Career Teacher programme, organisation of staff induction and study days, facilitation of coaching and professional dialogue and management of the National College People Development platform in partnership with the Director of Studies in the Senior School.

This is a facilitative and enabling leadership role. It does not include responsibility for performance management, formal lesson observation for appraisal or strategic leadership of People Development, which sits with the Head of Junior School. Instead, the role focuses on supporting colleagues in developing confidence, expertise and professional curiosity within a culture of reflection and collaboration.

This is a substantive teaching post within the Junior School. The successful candidate will serve as a Form Teacher and play a full and active role in the pastoral and academic life of their class.

The Head of Professional Learning responsibility is an additional leadership responsibility attached to the teaching role. In recognition of the coordination and implementation duties associated with this position, the postholder will receive a 25% reduction in teaching commitment to enable them to fulfil these responsibilities effectively and with appropriate care.

The role therefore combines excellent classroom practice with defined leadership responsibility. The successful candidate will model outstanding teaching, maintain strong relationships with pupils and families as a Form Teacher, and support colleagues across the Junior School with clarity, organisation and professional generosity.

At Uppingham Cairo, teachers benefit from exceptional opportunities for professional growth and the satisfaction of working within a thriving and purposeful school community where expectations are high and relationships are strong. The school offers outstanding facilities and abundant resources on a remarkable campus set within the New Giza landscape, providing an inspiring environment for teaching and professional collaboration. Strong and active links with Uppingham School in the United Kingdom ensure alignment with the highest standards of British independent education.

The role offers a competitive salary together with a generous range of benefits designed to support both professional and personal wellbeing. These include high-quality accommodation where applicable, comprehensive private healthcare, meals in school, sports centre and gym membership and transport during term time. Professional development opportunities are available for all staff, and the potential for progression within the growing family of Uppingham schools is significant. In addition, staff with children are eligible for up to two full Day Boarding scholarships at Uppingham Cairo, providing access to an outstanding British education.

Applications should be made using the Uppingham Cairo Application Form and accompanied by a covering letter. Completed applications should be sent by email to recruitment26@uppinghamcairo.com. Please do not submit applications online, as they will not be considered.

Please ensure that you complete the application form in full, with the names and contact details of two professional referees, to include your current or most recent head teacher if you are or have been employed in a school. CVs may also be sent in addition to the application form and covering letter, but are not required.

Uppingham Cairo opened in September 2024 as the first overseas school of Uppingham UK, one of the most distinguished and historic independent schools in the world. For the first time since 1584, there is another Uppingham. Like their fellow Uppinghamians in the UK, our pupils are inspired by the intellectual rigour of an academic curriculum that encourages exploration, critical analysis, calculated risk-taking, communication and teamwork. They are encouraged to use their imagination, to think creatively, to explore the world around them, to be ambitious and to strive for academic excellence. They will become team players, leaders and innovators. Most importantly, they will learn how to think, not what to think.

From teaching to business support roles, Uppingham Cairo is a vibrant, inclusive and forward-looking environment that provides a wealth of opportunities for a whole range of professions. Our staff are valued and supported, understanding that we all have an important role in educating, nurturing and inspiring the next generation.
