Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an inspiring and talented leader to join the Senior Leadership Team of a large, thriving, over-subscribed and diverse north London school where a belief in growth mindset underpins all aspects of school life.

East Barnet School (EBS) is a supportive, creative and close-knit community where student behaviour is excellent and staff retention is high. An emphasis on both academic and pastoral support for staff and students has helped to shape our clearly defined culture and ethos which promotes wellbeing as well as success.

Integral to the school’s success is the adoption of innovative strategies to drive improvement, for example using the instructional coaching model to develop staff, and the implementation of Disruption Free Learning to ensure a calm and orderly learning environment, which is frequently remarked upon by visitors.

Our dynamic leadership team is highly visible, collaborative and effective, working to unlock student learning potential whilst incorporating our core values of ‘I Want to Learn’ and ‘Do the Right Thing’ in developing students into lifelong learners who excel academically. We uphold the belief that motivation and hard work, together with kindness and respect, are central to whole person growth and building character for both students and staff alike.

The successful Deputy Headteacher will be a senior leader with a proven track record, passionate about teaching, learning, systems and strategic planning.

The person that we are looking to appoint will:

  • Be an expert in teaching and learning with a sustained proven track record, preferably at Assistant/Deputy Headteacher level, of raising achievement.
  • Always lead by example with integrity, creativity and clarity.
  • Be an excellent leader who embraces current research in education to drive substantial and effective strategic change at a whole school level.
  • Be an inspirational classroom practitioner with the ability to enthuse students and staff.
  • Ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve their full potential through an inclusive approach to education.

Benefits of working at EBS:

Professional Development

  • The school is committed to growth mindset and the professional development of all colleagues. East Barnet School offers an extensive in-house Continuing Professional Learning (CPL) programme.
  • At East Barnet School positive mental health and wellbeing is paramount. In the implementation of all new initiatives and policies, the impact on staff wellbeing is always considered. For example, we offer Wellbeing days, counselling through a healthcare service, easy access to dry-cleaning and daily refreshments.
  • Leadership and Coaching programmes are particularly useful for staff.
  • We have received several awards in recognition of our personal and professional development of staff, including the Carnegie Award for Mental Health in Schools.

Location

  • Serviced by great train, underground and bus transport links: Northern line, Piccadilly line and overground (New Barnet) station and all are within walking distance.
  • Being based in the outskirts of London means we benefit from a more rural location and cheaper housing prices whilst being only a short train journey into the centre of London.
  • For those who drive, we have an ample free car park, and we have bike racks for those who choose to cycle.
  • There are plenty of local shops and supermarkets in the surrounding area around the school, and a great view across East Barnet from our floor to ceiling panoramic Library window.

Working atmosphere

  • March 2022 Ofsted inspection recognised that: 'Pupils behave very well in lessons and they are keen to learn. They listen to teachers, contribute their ideas and work hard. Outside of lessons, pupils' behaviour is calm and orderly.'
  • The school offers a very supportive, friendly and warm atmosphere.

Facilities

  • The state-of-the-art school building which was opened in September 2010 incorporates extensive grounds, modern outside sports facilities, excellent IT provision and contemporary dining areas, with our Sixth Form Cafe, now proudly serving Costa Coffee.

East Barnet School first opened in 1937, but has only had five Headteachers in over 80 years of operation. We now have a state-of-the-art modern building which opened in September 2010 and was designed in close consultation with staff and students to capture the school’s "I want to learn" philosophy. We became an Academy in April 2011.

Our school is characterised by our outstanding pastoral system, the excellent support we provide for our staff and our philosophy of compassionate leadership. East Barnet School was delighted to be awarded the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools ‘School Mental Health Award’ at Silver Level in March 2020. The school was recognised by the Lead Coach as having a warm and nurturing environment where staff and students are well supported. The school is leading the way on a wide variety of mental health partnerships in the area.

The wellbeing of our students is vitally important, and so is the wellbeing of our staff. The school has a Staff Council where new ideas are presented to the Headteacher (we have a Student Council too!), and we offer various sporting activities for staff to take part in after school - or join other members of the team in taking a walk round our cycle track during lunchtime! To make life a little easier for busy staff, we also have a dry cleaning pick-up and drop-off service, car washing, and Mindfulness sessions, along with other initiatives to improve work-life balance.

Our Motto, "I want to learn" reflects a belief that motivation is the most important factor for achieving successes in education. We also know that interesting and challenging lessons, combined with a culture where educational success is valued and respected by all members of the school community will ensure that students remain focused on learning. Our success in achieving such a culture is undoubtedly the reason for the high academic standards and popularity of East Barnet School.

Behaviour and safety were judged to be outstanding at the last OFSTED inspection. Exclusions are relatively low and attendance is very high. However, the ethos of our school is more wide ranging and richer than these basic tenets. We aspire to develop in all our students the personal qualities which are required for successful adult lives, and to instil attitudes and behaviours that will help them to make a positive contribution to their communities and the wider world.

We are proud of being a true comprehensive school, where students throughout the ability range are able to achieve success. We celebrate our diversity and respect the heritage, religion and culture of all our students and staff.

A number of our members of staff have children who attend the school, and many were ex-students themselves. We therefore have a very strong community spirit and are committed to providing all our children with the best education possible.

East Barnet School may have a fabulous building, but it is the people that make it really special.

Together we are #TeamEBS!
