An opportunity for an educational practitioner to challenge and motivate Sixth Form students in achieving their academic aspirations. Our motto at Riverside is Excellence for All and this position would offer you the opportunity to join a sixth form team who put this ethos into practice each day. Progression to teacher training may be available to the right candidate.

Riverside School is a mixed 11-18 free school that opened in September 2013. We are fully subscribed in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 and currently have 1200 students on roll, including our new sixth form. We will eventually grow to a full capacity of 2000 students.

Riverside works in partnership with the Local Authority (London Borough of Barking and Dagenham) to meet the needs of a rapidly growing school population in the Thames View and Riverside areas in the southern part of the borough, on the north bank of the River Thames.

Purpose of the Role

To work efficiently and effectively under the direct guidance and instruction of the Director of Sixth Form.

Academic Leaders are required to be proactive, use their initiative and be resourceful in order to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of each individual student. You will work on an individual basis with students: ensuring they are organised, using effect revision strategies to aid understanding and progress, are meeting deadlines and are seeking advice from subject teachers.

Qualification 

  • Undergraduate level degree 
  • GCSE grade equivalent of Level 5 or above qualification in English and maths.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure strategies to support sixth form pupils are being implemented in revision and study plans.
  • Planning and delivering small groups or 1:1 intervention.
  • Attending relevant meetings in school and with external agencies.
  • Attending relevant INSET days and staff meetings.
  • Establishing good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding to individual needs appropriately.
  • Promoting the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
  • Being aware of pupil problems/progress/achievements and reporting to the director of sixth form.
  • Undertaking pupil record-keeping as requested.
  • Providing feedback to the class teacher where necessary after the lesson in order to ensure the individual needs pupils are being met in the class to enable excellent pupil progress.
  • Supporting students with basic IT skills, as directed. 
  • Being aware of and complying with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns through the form and passed to the DSL.
  • Being aware of and supporting differences and ensuring all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  • Contributing to the overall ethos/aims of the school.
  • Accompanying teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required.

Responsibilities to the Headteacher

  • To promote the aims, values and ethos of the school and uphold school rules.
  • To read and adhere to the procedures set out in the Staff Handbook.
  • To carry out a share of supervisory duties in accordance with normal school schedules.
  • To participate in the appropriate meetings with colleagues.
  • To participate in performance management arrangements.
  • To carry out other duties as may be reasonably required by the Headteacher.
  • To support the ethos of the school and enforce the school’s behavioural and uniform policies.

The above duties are neither exclusive nor exhaustive and the post holder may be required to carry out such other appropriate duties as may be required by the Headteacher within the grading level of the post and the competence of the post holder.

About Riverside School

Riverside School is an outstanding, mixed, non-denominational secondary school with a sixth form. It is an academy located in Barking, Greater London (Inner London Pay Scale).

Riverside opened as a new provision in September 2013, it currently has 1500 students on roll and will eventually grow to a full capacity of 1800 students aged 11-18 by 2021. The school moved to its new £45m state-of-the-art premises in September 2017 with very large 75-95m² classrooms and impressive indoor/outdoor sports facilities.

Riverside School is currently in the country's top 50 schools for student progress, P8: +0.99 and was graded Ofsted outstanding in October 2022. "The school’s motto, ‘Excellence for All’, reflects the ambition that leaders have for  the whole school community. A very strong culture of high expectations across the  school means that pupils here are encouraged to succeed. Pupils benefit from a rich  curriculum that is taught expertly by very well-trained staff. The ambition for all to  do well includes those pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), who follow the same carefully considered curriculum as their peers.

Pupils work hard and achieve well. Very clearly established routines ensure that pupils are engaged in their learning and that their work is of a consistently high  quality. Standards of behaviour are very high. Lessons are not disrupted by poor  behaviour, and cases of bullying are rare. When bullying does happen, pupils are  confident that it will be dealt with. Pupils feel safe in the school.
