Job overview

About us

Plumstead Manor is a thriving and popular secondary school located in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. There has been a school on our site since 1913, with the first 105 years as a girls’ school. In response to local demand we admitted our first mixed cohort in 2018 and are now fully co-educational.

Ours is vibrant, diverse and inclusive school with over 60 languages spoken across our community. We have a clear vision founded on excellence and justice, with the ambition to offer a world-class education to the young people and families of Greenwich. Our recipe for success is based on high quality teaching founded on academic rigour, blended with the expectations, support and guidance to create a safe and happy environment. Above all, we want our young people to leave school equipped with the powerful knowledge and necessary skills to change the world for the better. In order to foster successful young people and cultivate harmonious communities, we aim to offer young people excellence in all that we do, so that they can overcome any barrier in their lives and secure greater justice. Our curriculum offers a range of pathways, blending the mastery of knowledge with the development of transferable skills, which see our young people progress onto a full range of future pathways including medicine and veterinary science, courses at the most competitive universities as well as high-quality apprenticeships.

The role

Pathways is our internal provision offering support, intervention and a tailored curriculum to young people who are vulnerable and in danger of suspension or exclusion. Housed within a dedicated suite of rooms, students are offered a supportive environment where the same high standards expected in the wider school community are maintained. Blending a programme of graduated support with an academic curriculum, Pathways offers a flexible and personalised provision for young people across Key Stage 3 and 4. Our work in this respect is pioneering, and is used as a model by many other schools in our area.

We are looking for an outstanding practitioner to be an academic learning mentor within this process. The role will involve promoting high expectation for both behaviour and academic achievement. You will support the delivery of a tailored curriculum which will meet the needs of vulnerable learners. You will also help to deliver a suite of graduated ‘early help’ interventions to address social, emotional and behavioural needs.

Hours: 35 hours per week, 39 weeks per year (term time only plus 1 week).

To be successful, you need to:

  • be familiar with best practice in teaching students with specific learning and special educational needs, or who pose behavioural challenges.
  • be able to liaise with a range of staff across the school, and to disseminate best practice to them.
  • be able to maintain accurate and confidential documentation.
  • build good links with other professionals and outside agencies
