The school was created in 1995 by the amalgamation of Heckmondwike Junior School and Battye Street Infant and Nursery School and serves a culturally diverse population, which is reflected within the school’s own community.

The catchment area of the school contains a variety of housing, e.g private, housing association and rented properties. This broad spectrum of social and economic backgrounds is reflected on the school roll (currently 446 children) plus 52 nursery places.
