Emanuel School has an exciting opportunity for a well-qualified and experienced individual in the role of Boathouse Manager.
The Emanuel Boat House is one of a very few exclusive rowing sites on the tideway, and the postholder will manage this key site for Emanuel school. You will work closely with the Director of Rowing to provide an excellent state of rowing equipment, site facilities and support services, assuming responsibility for the checking and promoting of safe practice in rowing. In addition to this, you will be accountable for ensuring Boat House facilities and equipment are well maintained and compliant to allow rowers to race and compete at the highest levels safely. The Boathouse manager may be required to assist with coaching as and when required but is not likely to lead a rowing squad.
A self-motivated and robust individual, you will bring a wide skillset to this role, including the ability to coach from a launch as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Extensive experience in rowing and maintenance is essential to success in this role, balancing this with rigorous Health & Safety or regulatory compliance experience. A clean driving licence with D1 endorsement and towing endorsement is essential, along with the ability to drive with boat trailers.
This role requires flexibility on hours and will entail some weekend and evening work. Time off in lieu will be awarded and taken in agreement with the Director of Rowing.
Holiday rowing and racing takes place and there will be busy times of the year between February & July.

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1100 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.
We are an ambitious community. This summer, 89% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 39% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 64%. This is 31% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic achievement in the country. The last ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”
We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next three years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both traditionally areas of strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in the 2023 Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.
Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.
