Job overview

Emanuel School seeks an exceptional Chaplain who will represent the school’s Christian foundation, nurture its spiritual life, take responsibility for chapel worship, and be a pastor to our community, supporting the wider pastoral team.

The school chapel is at the physical heart of the school and has been central to our community since the school's foundation. You will be responsible for the provision of regular chapel services and large-scale occasional services such as carol services. As Chaplain, you will be a visible Christian presence in the school, who facilitates various groups and activities to cultivate spiritual life. You must bear an important pastoral presence, providing a pastoral listening service for pupils and staff and working closely with the Deputy Head: Pastoral and his team. Visibility is important in this role, and you must be approachable and personable with students, getting to know them in the various different contexts of a busy London day school. You will lead faith and discussion groups about current ethical or moral issues and be someone who encourages each pupil to develop an independent and searching mind. Providing valuable support and guidance, you will spiritually assist teaching and support staff regardless of their faith and background.

This post may be combined with academic teaching or another role dependent on your qualifications, strengths, and experience. We are open to exploring various possibilities for the future of this central role within our community, including in a part-time or full-time capacity or as part of shared role with a local church. The Emanuel community represents the religious plurality and secularism of modern Britain, so it is essential that as Chaplain you will take an inclusive approach, showing respect for differing traditions and being approachable to all regardless of faith. Applicants should be ordained in the Church of England or wider Anglican Communion and be eligible to be licensed by the Diocesan Bishop.

Working at Emanuel

There is a genuine buzz at the school. Colleagues enjoy their work and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school.

Everyone works hard here, and anyone joining the school should expect to do so. There’s a strong sense of community and source of friendship. From the briefing to all staff, to the half termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a common room committee, there’s a dialogue about the school’s aims.

We aim to look after our staff too. We have an appraisal scheme with a focus on the employee’s professional development; we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities; we offer a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support; and we’re committed to supporting staff wellbeing. On a more practical level, all staff benefit from good pension provision and a free lunch during term time.

We may close the vacancy earlier than the specified deadline if the right candidate is found.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1100 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 89% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 39% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 64%. This is 31% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic achievement in the country. The last ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next three years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both traditionally areas of strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in the 2023 Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied and fulfilling working life, giving them a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment.

We wish you the best of luck with your application.
